Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Though Dead or Alive 3 doesn't revolutionise the fighting genre, it does offer a great gaming experience and its graphics easily surpass every other fighting game on the market--on any system.
There are eight modes of play in DOA3, including Story mode, Team Battle, Tag Battle and Sparring mode. The latter mode is customisable and is a nice way for new players to learn how to play the game, while Story mode lets you take one of the 16 available characters through a series of matches, culminating in a fight against the über -powerful Omega. Once you defeat Omega, a short movie specific to your charaue is laughable) but the end-movies are pretty cool and it's fun playing through the game as each of the characters.
The real meat of the game, though, is its combat, and DOA3 delivers in spades. Each character has specific attacks--such as Zack's Devil Elbow or Bass Armstrong's Stun Gun Chop--and once you get the moves down, the entire affair can unfold like a carefully choreographed ballet with combatants blocking blows, counter attacking and landing devastating punch-and-kick combos. Adding to the game's appeal are the massive and detailed multi-level arenas (which were introduced in DOA2), where a precise kick or punch can send a combatant plummeting through the air down to the arena's next level.
It's obvious that DOA3 was designed to be a showcase for the Xbox's graphical prowess and it shows--the game's graphics are awesome. The character models look amazing and feature highly detailed clothing and accessories, and the animations are extremely smooth. The environments are also outstanding, and feature lots of little touches such as fluttering leaves, snow-covered ground that can be torn up during the course of a fight, great-looking water and superb background structures. So while DOA3 doesn't rewrite the rules of the fighting genre, its great graphics and intense fighting--especially in multiplayer--make for an enjoyable gaming experience. --William Harms

Customer Reviews
good, but limited.
This game is graphically unbelievable, and the sound is amazing too. The locations are massive, perfectly realised, and the characters look brilliant. However there are a couple of flaws that bring the game down a little.
The fighting mechanics are interesting. I was expecting a button-basher, but it is really quite complex if you look beneath the surface. Besides the usual variation of kicks, punches and blocks, you can deflect, throw and counter. Most moves have a counter-move, and you can sometimes find your attacks being deflected quite regularly if you are playing against a savvy opponent. Tactics become more of an issue than in a game like Soul Calibur. DoA3 is what you make it. If you want a pick-up-and-play fighter, then it will do the job. If you want a deeper game that you learn over time, then I suppose it could satisfy you too.
The one player mode is fairly limited. The main one player section is the 'story mode', where your character of choice embarks on their (frankly bizarre) personal scenario. You fight around six matches before getting to the end boss. There are also tag-matches, a survival mode, training and team battles. I have found it to be very easy on the normal difficulty level, and impossibly hard on higher difficulty levels. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground in that respect...
The game really comes into its own with two-players. You can fight co-operative tag-matches, or obviously against each other, and it is incredibly fun.
If you regularly play games with other people, then DoA3 is pretty essential. If you are mainly a solo player you might find that, aside from mastering new moves, you can discover everything this game has to offer in a fairly short space of time. Having said that, I think DoA3 is the pick of the Xbox Classics range, and the new price shouldn't suggest any lack of quality.
Dead or Alive 3
With the latest state of the art graphics, and simple to pick up and play interface Dead or Alive three really sets the pace for later titles to follow. The ability of the Xbox are really shown-off in the 4 player tag battles, with reallistic character animations and interactive scenery, kicking butt has never been quite so fun. Blasting the opposition into an icicle or chucking them off the roof of a house seems to make the original fighting games look like a complete and utter waste of time. With all the different characters this game really is "a minute to learn a life time to master" game.
My god!
Ok Listen - I KNOW fighting games ok? I am a tekken master, have beaten street fighter (all variants) but I have NEVER seen anything like this?! I mean, u guys will NOT believe it when you get to the boss level (an evil demon called Omega) and the view changes to 3D full motion video THAT YOU PLAY... You will not believe it!
The combos are straight out of movies, and different characters react differently to each other, they are always talking and arguing with each other throughout the fights! You can even throw people through windows doors etc or off buildings and clifftops! Nothing new you say, well you can jump down after them and continue beating them up! One level is just like crouching tiger, and when you stream some combos together u almost sit back and watch as it is sooooo cinematic.Effortless combos, drop-dead gorgeous graphics and speed you would not believe (AND that end-level) combine to make this an awesome fighter! Buy it buy it!
