Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Debut album by critically-acclaimed band who are part of New Jersey's "noisecore" scene. Mixing elements of hardcore, grindcore and death metal with a constantly evolving progression of musical ideas, they are similar in style to scene stalwarts Converge. The album was produced by Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Murder City Devils, Isis).

Customer Reviews

Chalenging, original and excellent.5
Burnt by the Sun successfully combine elements of grindcore with Dillinger Escape Plan's talent for erratic songstructuring, to create an album that is both techinically proficient and brutally aggressive.

The band differ from Dillinger, in that they do not bludgeon the listener with schizoprehnic riffing but almost coerce the listener into their violent compositions, through its fantastic tempo changes. Opener "Dracula with Glasses" shifts from groove based hardcore to blast beats, then to traditional rock timings, before launching into the roaring second track.

At times the sound is nothing short of ferocious, as drummer David Witte reels off awesome rhythms, whilst guitars and bass provide caustic riffs. All the while "vocal machine" Mike Olender attempts to emphasise his guttural vocals through alternatively roaring and screaming. I once heard him described as sounding like a dinosaur and I have to admit, its a pretty accurate description.

Tieing in with the album's title, the inlay card features stylish imagery of film spools and contains quotes from films that provide an introduction to the meaning of the lyrics. Olender's lyrics also display an intelligence and humour not usually assosciated with music of this nature, as he deals with themes similar to those explored in Fight Club - the drudgery of modern existence, the dominance of capitalism and a desire to achieve a lifestyle revolution.

With a fantastic production from Matt Bayles (ISIS, Pearl Jam), an exceptional level of creative talent (2 band members were in the influential Human Remains), and an excellent layout and design, I would recommnend "Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution" to the listener who likes their metal extreme and challenging, be they a fan of noise-core, grind or death metal.

a fine album3
Burnt by the sun were, were no more a band and now are a band again if you catch my drift, they are another one of the long list of bands that have reformed for whatever reason to see what they can do in this age, this debut album from 2002 shows a band that lean on many bands sound and create an album that while nothing new is interesting and at times exciting.
The band fuse mathcore with slight elements of grind, the band are heavily influenced by bands like meshuggah and dillinger escape plan but their sound has influenced others including a life once lost and maybe even latter day dillinger escape plan which may sound strange but im talking about the vocal style of the latest dillinger vocalist greg puciato.
The finest mathcore album of all time in my opinion is miss machine by the dillinger escape plan and all compares to that and this album cant really walk along side that without being intimidated but for all of that this film themed album contains some cracking songs such as 'dracula with glasses','shooter mcgavin' and the sublime 'mortimer'.All in all i find this album good and worthy of 3.5 out of 5,lets see what burnt by the sun in 2007 can now do.
