Amazon.co.uk Review
John McClane is back, and he still hasn't got a clean vest. Die Hard: Vendetta is the GameCube's first exclusive first-person shooter and, despite some problems, it puts the [expletive deleted] back into yippie-kai-yay. There have been lots of attempts at making video games out of the Die Hard films; the only decent one so far has been the original Die Hard Trilogy for the PSone.
This new game isn't based on any single film but features its own story that takes place several years after Die Hard with a Vengeance and so has nothing in common with the recent PC game Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza. With Vendetta it seems as if the developers are trying to "do a GoldenEye", taking an established action franchise and building a fairly unique shooter around it. Although it's not as inventive as its inspiration, there is a genuine attempt in Vendetta to provide something new: the real-world police settings are well conceived and the constant set-pieces are exciting and well scripted (complete with lots of foul language).
Where the game falls down is in the awful graphics and some questionable level design--in particular a number of irritating jumping sequences. But if you can persevere with these there's much to enjoy, especially some of the neat little touches such as being able to hold bad guy leaders hostage and build up Matrix-style bullet time by saving innocent people. It can't be recommended unequivocally but if you like the films or first-person shooters in general, Vendetta is well worth considering. --David Jenkins.

"A fun and involving blast that remains true to its gritty movie license. 7/10."
Manufacturer's Description
There's a massive difference between dying and dying hard. Just ask the evil Hans Gruber, the victim of a vicious skyscraper homicide at the hands of detective John McClane. Having said that, however, we think that if you're going to die, you might as well go out with a bang. Thankfully, British coders Bits Studios feel exactly the same way and have given GameCube owners the chance to bless bad guys the world over with outrageously spectacular deaths--courtesy of your itchy trigger fingers, of course.
Not to be confused with the age-old PSone shooter, Die Hard Trilogy, GameCube belter Die Hard Vendetta is the perfect representation of the hugely popular movie franchise. Incorporating some of the best scenes across the three movies, the game unceremoniously thrusts players into the thick of the action, showcasing both recognisable scenes and brand new situations in which to spray ammunition. Taking its cue from such greats as Perfect Dark, Max Payne and Metal Gear Solid, Die Hard Vendetta erupts onto the screen in spectacular fashion, with eye-meltingly gorgeous visuals, backed up by solid first-person shoot-em-up action. Plot twists, weapons galore, tactical elements, and the ability to raise your adrenaline to dangerous levels. This is one not to be missed.
Customer Reviews
Die you scum, DIE!!!
Die Hard Vendetta can best be described with one word. Mediocre.
You play as tough guy cop John McLaine, who seems to foil terrorists for a living. Anyway, John is caught up in a whole lot of trouble when his daughter Lucy is kidnapped by a big bad tycoon and a flushed out Hollywood Star.
First of all, the graphics are good, but not great. The rendering on people's faces is beautifully done but the fact that they re-use faces in the game means is plain lazy and could have easily been avoided.
The controls are good and there are plenty of alternitive control modes for all those who don't agree with the original control scheme. However, it does take some getting used to the way they are layed out but you'll get the hang of it.
A neat addition is the auto targetting scheme. You'll have to face loads of badguys and the auto-targetting makes it alot easier. Another auto scheme is the auto jump. Simply run towards a gap and you'll (hopefully) jump over the gap and land safely on the other side.
The developers have also tried their hands at stealth modes as well. Simply press a button and you will enter stealth mode and will be able to creep up onto enemies and jam a gun into their head, making the other enemies place down their weapons and surrendering.
Then you have hero mode which is a kind of slow-mo mode, and bullet cam mode and... < O.k..., I'm calm now... Well, there are sadly bad bits as well which obstruct this from a perfect 5 mark. First, at times the A.I is pretty lame. You can walk past guys at time and they won't do a thing about it unless you shoot someone. Second is that the game can be unfairly difficult. At one point, you must find a way to escape a building in 17 seconds or get blow up in the proccess. It took me hours to find the soloution to that problem. Third is that if you do one itty bitty thing wrong then you are in trouble as you stare at the OBJECTIVE FAILURE words at the screen. And finally, this game seems to punish you for trying new things such as finding an alternate way through things and seems badly scripted. There is also some bad language which can make your ears blush at times, so needless to say this ain't one for the kids. All in all, Die Hard Vendetta is a good attempt and is worth a rent out at most. But there are better shooters out there such as Timesplitters or the infamous Perfect Dark. Like I said, one word: Mediocre
the Gamecubes shooter Total *****
Better than expected! However, give Vendetta a chance, and under this ugly duckling lies something that could pass as a swan. Lots of neat touches make this more than a run-of-the-mill first person shooter and even elevate it above Timesplitters 2 when it comes to single player mode (which is all there is in Vendetta, although the TS2 engine puts Vendetta wholly to shame). The missions themselves are pretty hard and provide you with a decent challenge. One great touch is the ability to sneak up on criminals and grab them from behind. Grab the leader, and he'll persuade the others to drop their guns- then you simply walk of the guns and they will fall to the floor as if they have been handcuffed. You can then interrogate them at points to fulfill key mission objectives. A great touch, and one that means that not all situations are solved by running in guns blazing- although you can take that approach if you want. Another plus is the story and characterisation. Although the actual models and cut scenes are terribly drawn, you do feel a sense of plot progression and most of the way through you can lurk out of sight listening to conversations between criminals. One of the game's key points is the fruity language which is strictly for over 18's. This aspect does add to the atmosphere and isn't gratuitous- just adds to the movie atmosphere. The weapons are also excellent. The ability to use most weapons with two hands adds a real sense of satisfaction and they are well rendered and fun to use. The incorporation of 'Hero Time' which is basically a rip-off of Max Paynes 'Bullet Time' is a neat addition. You build up Hero Time by rescuing civilians and killing criminals. One criticism is that it maybe isn't integral enough to the gameplay although I liked the choice whether I wanted to use it or not, whereas you have to use it in Max Payne to win. If you can excuse graphical disappointments, I would say that as a single player game, Vendetta is far better than Timesplitters 2. On the middle difficulty setting it will provide a challenge to even the most seasoned FPS player and its few neat touches such as stealth mode make it a good addition to the FPS pack. All in all, better than I expected.
Now when the Gamecube first came out, there were no shooters, but then lots of good ones come out at once. Medal of honer, Timesplitters 2, turok (well not turok as we are talking about good shooters) Etc. Well the one that will take the crown of the best shooters on the Gamecube will be the one and only Die Hard:Vendetta.
Ever seen the Die Hard movies with Bruce Willis, where hes the great cop that stops terrorists in places like the Nakatomi plaza?? Well they have made a game set 5 years in the future, where the coders have made a great story line, and added new elements to a shooter.
Graphics.
Excellent, the best. you wont ever get better, the best graphical effects is when you kill the last guy in the level, and the bullet goes in slow motion, flying through the air.
All the guns are beautifully designed, same with the levels, as the you look at the water in some levels, you think you are dreaming.
Sounds.
Originally they were going use the normal gamecube music system, Musyx, but then Factor 5( the creator of musyx) realeased that you could use Dolby Digital. Now they have put in Dolby Digitals great sound it sounds better that ever. not that it didnt sound bad to begin with.
Gameplay.
Really enjoying, you will love it, and they have made this game better than ever by adding things not seen in other shooters. The biggest of them all is the fact that you can use stealth or go in shooting, you select this on the main screen, you can either go sneak up to them or rampge around with a shotgun or a rifle. you can also listen to enemies conversations, find out who the leader is, sneak up and put the leader in a headlock. After collecting his fellow terrorists gun break his neck and kill them.
Originallity.
This is original in some place, and not in others, as you can notice one or two thing taken from perfect dark, and the others are totally original. But the storyline is one of a kind.
I give this to this game, as not only is it great, challenging, and fun, it also adds new aspects to a game to make this a
MUST BUY
Ok- so the bad stuff our of the way first. The framerate can be really ropey and the engine is a bit suspect (try running right up to a person with a gun and laughing as their head swells in proportion to your hands). The textures are really dull, so much so that it could be a PS2 port, and the people are of a pretty low polygon count. The developers have also introduced a bit of an FPS faux-pas (hitherto unseen since Turok on the N64) where you have to use the jump key. Although you jump across large gaps, it still proves to be an annoyance when you are stuck in holes and are struggling to get out of them whilst being shot. The counter to this, which is ducking and crawling seems to work pretty well but I question the whether having to jump enhances the gameplay.
