Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Want to play a first-person shooter on your console? Tired of there being no proper GoldenEye sequel? Wishing that you could play the part of a Barbary ape in the Wild West? TimeSplitters 2 is the game for you if you answered "yes" to any of these questions.

When Rare made GoldenEye for the N64 in 1997 they created the best first-person shoot-'em-up the world had ever seen and, arguably, has ever seen to this day. Many of the geniuses behind the game left Rare shortly after to set-up their own company, Free Radical; their first game was the rather rushed (in time for the PS2's launch) TimeSplitters but this sequel is polished to perfection and easily one of the best games of the year.

One of the main problems with the original TimeSplitters was its awful single-player mode, but this has been totally revamped for the sequel with a proper story mode, all-new time zones and weapons and absolutely mountains of unlockable hidden extras. Thankfully they’ve kept the wicked sense of humour from the first game, but there's also a lot more strategy for solo players this time around, including an amusing homage to GoldenEye's Arkangelsk Dam level as well as pastiches of other games and films scattered throughout the game.

The real reason for TimeSplitters 2's greatness, though, is the multiplayer mode. This is GoldenEye to the nth degree, with superbly designed levels, tons of weapons and all sorts of tricks and gimmicks such as remote control gun turrets and invisibility pills. It may lack the epic scope of Halo but in multiplayer mode at least this is a lot more fun--and fun, as The Beatles never said, is all you need. --David Jenkins

The best of the series5
As you all must know, this game is a massive improvement from TS1. And I mean MASSIVE.

The story mode is excellent:
The timesplitters and humans are in a war, but the humans are losing because the timesplitters are using time crystals to travel back in time and kill all the humans. When a small ship arrives at the timesplitters base to steal the crystals, the timesplitters protect the crystals by hiding them in different places in different times, future and past. So you go after them.
We see some old characters like Captain Ash and Harry Tipper. Examples of levels are: Notre Dam and Planet X.

The arcade has got way better games, including the all new assault, virus, zones and many more. They also have kept the best arcade games from the last one such as deathmatch and capture the bag. You also have new guns in this game like the flamethrower. And more interesting characters like Elijah Jones and Viola. It contains better levels like Ice station and training ground.

Also there is an arcade league, which is a bit like challenge. But you play arcade game challenges like assault. With this you can unlock characters, game modes and guns. What you unlock is determined by what trophy you get for each challenge - gold, silver and bronze.

The challenge mode is back with more fun challenges, such as shooting clay monkeys and shooting as much zombies as you can. You also unlock things by completing the challenges.

The brilliant mapmaker is back with a bigger choice of tiles and better graphics. You can make your maps several feet high, whether small maps or large maps they are great. The only promblem is that even though you have loads of different tiles to choice from, you don't have many tile styles unlike the first one.

This game is a first person shooter. With story, challenge, arcade and mapmaker you will naver get bored of this game.

Timesplitters is back and better than ever!!!5
The first timesplitters was released on the launch date of the ps2 and still remains to be one of the best multiplayer games yet. Although we have to face the facts, the game wasn't as good as goldeneye. The single player mode felt rushed and had very little variety. Most people admit they played the game just for it's fantastic multiplayer action. Now timesplitter's 2 is out, and it's every bit as good as you expected and better!

Firstly the single player has been upgraded dramatically, and now there are more level's each one unique in their own way.
The levels range from 1853 'wild west' to 2315 'robot factory'.
Not only are the levels different, the goals themselves have also been changed. In the previous game the objective was simple:
collect an object and return it to the beggining of the level.
This was one of the main reasons i was soon returning the game to a second hand shop! Now the levels work by using multiple objectives, and to add extra variety some of the levels contain secondary objectives. Although you do not have to complete these secondary objectives, there is an immense feeling of satisfaction if you do complete them. The objectives themselves differ in the levels. In the neo tokyo level you must trail a hacker back to her base, great for mgs fans! While on the atomsmasher level you will find yourself disarming bombs in an evil villians base. All objectives are great fun and you will find yourself replaying levels over and over again.
The latest addition to the single player also includes cutscenes.
The cutscenes look great and introduce some of the craziest characters to the game. Single player is both amusing and classy.

Now you all want to know about the multiplayer and i wont dissapoint you. It's back and is also better than ever! With 16 different game modes, 12 different maps and 90 crazy characters to unlock you will find endless replay value in multiplayer.
A new addition to the multiplayer is 'arcade league'. This allows you to complete multiplayer levels against bots unreal tournament style! Completing levels with high scores will unlock new characters and maps. Like i said masses of replay value.

Other features include the return of the challenge mode.
This time it's much harder but even more rewarding. And yes there are monkeying around mini games! There are also secrets to be found in the game including game cartiridges!
Overall everything has been improved graphics, gameplay, sound, and replay value! Trust me you will lose nights of sleep!
Buy or rent?
A tough one, some people will dislike the cartoonish look of timesplitters 2, and may prefer gritty realsim like in 'medal of honour'. But you really should give it a chance and rent it.
However if you played and enjoyed the first one, dont heasitate just buy this amazing game.

The Best First Person Shooter5
I'm a massive fan of FPS games, and following the heavy gameplay of Medal of Honor Frontline, Timesplitters 2 was the perfect game to bring the sunshine back. Featuring some of the best graphics I've seen in a game of it's type and the differing levels lets the game avoid the tedious nature of repetition. The game has numerous laughs.

As with most games of it's type Timesplitters 2 really comes alive when you have a group of friends gathered round, merry carnage was never so much fun. However full praise to the developers for having the wisdom to introduce a completely new 1 player game, the words vast improvement, don't do it justice.

and then there's the map editor / creator, with means you can never really end this game, because you can always build something else.

If you're looking for a First person Shooter game that'll last Timesplitters 2 is the best.
