"Let's make sure history never forgets the name Enterprise", remarks a steely Picard in "Yesterday's Enterprise", one of the highlights of Star Trek: The Next Generation's remarkable third season. Not a chance, Captain. Thanks to new uniforms, a new look and strong new writing, this was the Next Gen's breakthrough year.

Cast changes solidified the team, with the return of Dr Crusher and LaForge now promoted to Chief Engineer. Worf got a meaty story arc all of his own ("The Sins of the Father") and Data made himself a daughter ("The Offspring"). Picard had a romantic vacation in "Captain's Holiday", and semi-regular crewmember Reg Barclay showed us that not everyone in Starfleet was perfect ("Hollow Pursuits"). By the time it reached its breathtaking Borg cliffhanger "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1", there was no longer any doubt that this show really was going where none had gone before.

On the DVD Star Trek: The Next Generation's third season on disc comes packaged in the now-familiar solid grey outer casing containing a seven-disc fold-out. The extra features follow the same pattern as before, with a "Mission Overview" for Year 3 and "Selected Crew Analysis", in which the new, old and returning cast members talk about this season in then and now interviews. The "Departmental Briefing" looks behind the scenes at the Production, with comments from, among many others, executive producer Michael Piller, visual effects supervisor Dan Curry, technical advisor Mike Okuda, and new composer Jay Chattaway. The "Memorable Missions" looks at the many season highs. The 1.33:1 picture quality is better than ever before, as is the vivid Dolby 5.1 surround. --Mark Walker

The best season of Star Trek: The Next Generation,
Now this is where it gets interesting... After the shortened and varied second season, The Next Generation finally gets going in the third season. Not only is the writing brilliant but the production values have had a shot in the arm. The revised title sequence is much stronger and the title music is re-mixed. The entire ship looks and sounds better too, with the new uniforms with the collars (much better).

A new director of photography was brought whose lighting technique allowed them to get rid of that "this is obviously filmed in a studio" look when creating planet side sequences. This season also has some of the best scores to accompany the series before it became a constant rehash of the same orchestral sequences later on in the programme. Ron Jones does a particularly excellent job, especially with "The Best of Both Worlds" and newcomer Jay Chattaway's score to "Tin Man" turned a mediocre episode into something more emotional.

This season shines with great episodes such as The Enemy (Romulans!), The Defector (real spy thriller stuff), The Hunted, The High Ground (terrorist episode). There are however 2 stunners: "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "The Best of Both Worlds." Alternative timelines and the Borg have always made some of the best episodes - Yesterday's Enterprise gives Tasha Yar a chance to return for an episode where the Federation is still at war with the Klingons. The Best of Both Worlds is the high point of the entire series - great story, great effects, great music, and that feeling of "they can't do that" when the "To be continued...." line appeared on the screen. Great stuff.

They can't do that . . . .
It's been said before and I have to agree; at the ending of this seasons finale, I knew it was coming, I know the conclusion of the story arc and still my reaction of seeing the legend To Be Continued . . . was Nooooo! When's the next box set coming out!
I am a moderate Star Trek fan and these DVD box sets have been wonderful, season three was superb especially episodes such as "The Offsprings", "Yesterday's Enterprise" & "Hollow Pursuits" which is one of my all time favorite being such a complete 'broccoli' myself!! and any episode starring Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan is bound to be good, she is a terrific actress and her on screen charisma is captivating especially her chemistry with Captain Picard. This is the best season so far.

Season 3's here and wow what an improvement!
The first season was good, the second season didn't really build on the start that well, but by the time season three rolls into town, it becomes clear that TNG is a series to be reckoned with. Behind the scenes, shake-ups in the writing department had been continual since TNG started, but season three introduces us to Rick Berman: Executive Producer, and even more importantly, Michael Piller: Head of Writing Staff (and one Ronald D. Moore's first Trek script - 'The Bonding' - not a bad episode either!) From this season on, TNG's already good characters begin to grow and become much more interesting, and once sometimes-mediocre stories are replaced with often considered Star Trek classics - season three boasts classic sci-fi 'Yesterday's Enterprise,' heart rendering 'The Offspring,' a TOS crossover, 'Sarek,' and the ultimate cliffhanger, 'The Best of Both Worlds.' These certainly make up for a slow start to the season, and pave the way for a great future for TNG.

Again, getting the season on DVD is totally worth the money - 26 episodes of entertainment, plus over an hour's worth of extra features? Amazing - this season looks at the return of Gates McFadden in particular (replacing Diane Muldaer who played the good Pulaski character, though in retrospect didn't fit into the TNG all that well.) Season three really was a good change for TNG, and could be considered one of its best. Personally, I don't, but at the moment its the best TNG DVD boxset out of the three available.
