Amazon.co.uk Review
The story of the Sugababes is a tale which might sound more appropriate to a band of leather-faced rock dinosaurs yet Angels With Dirty Faces is only the second album in their short career. Since dazzling the world with their anthem "Overload"; their first album flopped, they were dropped by their label, a founder member left and just when you thought they would give up, along comes Heidi Range and suddenly they get two consecutive number one singles. "Freak Like Me" was born of a Girls on Top bootleg of Gary Numan & Adina Howard which needed the "babes" attitude to crack the top 40. Second single "Round Round" is more like it; cowritten by the band, it has a far less distinctive sample and grooves like a Motown pop hit with a latter day R&B edge. If their debut One Touch was driven by 1960s R&B, Angels… is more in tune with today's R&B scene as on "Blue", a really bright, upbeat chorus blended with a dark and dirty verse. "Virgin Sexy" and "Supernatural" show a very mature Sugababes in a funk-rock superstyle which creeps menacingly like US divas En Vogue but sign-of-the-times lyrics like "I’m virgin sexy, if you want me just text me" remind us that they're a lot younger than they actually sound. On the whole, Angels… is far more accomplished than their debut. They have now successfully bridged all age gaps making their music so-called intelligent enough to reach the older people yet still fresh, dynamic and instant enough for a younger market. If you were to group them in the bracket of chart pop acts like S Club, Britney, Blue et al, The Sugababes are in a league of their own with a consistent album rather than a short string of sugar-soaked singles… it's hard to believe they are all the same age as or younger than Gareth Gates. --David Trueman

Customer Reviews
Superb return for the trio
The Sugagbaes have come back with a blinder. Like the two outstanding singles (Freak Like Me and Round and Round) this album oozes quality. It ranges from sassy in yer face club tracks such as Virgin Sexy, Just Don't Need This and Supernatural to powerful balleds such as Stronger (not the Britney track!!) and Breathin Easy. The title track is an infectious piece of pop that really ought to be the next single.
Other stand out tracks are 'Blue' which starts slowly and builds into a powerful balled, and 'Shape of My Heart' which was originally made by Sting. He obviously likes the reworking as he provides guest vocals on this track!! - This track is being tipped as a potential Christmas single for the girls.
Everytime I play this album, it seems to get better - there is not one duff track on here. It even has an additional mix of Round and Round which finishes the package off nicely.
Somehow I don't think this will flop like their debut album. After all they already have two number ones this year, and hopefully this album will make it a hat-track.
An amazing album!!
After the success of 'Overload' the Sugababes first album "One Touch" was a huge disappointment, with only one stand out song - 'Run For Cover', which was pretty amazing.
"Angels With Dirty Faces" shows, not a big change in direction but definitely much better quality material. 'Freak Like Me' is totally unlike anything other 'popular' artists of the moment have released. While a lot of pop artists have tried to move to a more R'n'B sound, this electro-pop sampled release was a welcome change in the charts.
'Round Round' is a fantastic piece of disco pop. The albums of many pop artists today are riddled with cheaply produced fillers with no real substance or lyrical meaning. This was evident on their last album but is totally avoided here. With all tracks given the same attention as the released singles the album is a pleasure right to the end. The next single 'Stronger' is fantastic! A haunting atmospheric ballad this builds up to the end. A track that really stands out is 'Shape' - a cover of Sting's 'Shape of My Heart'. It samples Sting's vocals and along with an edgy beat with gentle strings, it works really well! Their vocals have definitely improved and they definitely know what musical styles suit their voices, a mistake many pop artists make today. 'Breathe Easy' is a sweet ballad and the remix of 'Round Round' is as good as the original. A truly excellent album!!
If they don't get a Brit award!!!!
FREAK LIKE ME - doesn't really need me to go on about how fab it is! Great introduction to Heidi! Fab video too! 10/10
BLUE - didn't think much of it at first but really like it now! Chorus is great! 8/10
ROUND ROUND - really really good song! Almost a more mature 'Overload'. The chorus is insanely catchy! 10/10
STRONGER - immediately a stand-out track! This song is perfect for the girls' voices and the lyrics in the verses are really good 10/10
SUPERNATURAL - I have a feeling this will be the next single as they performed it on their PA tour to promote the album although I'm not sure why cos although it is excellent, there are better tracks on the album but I suppose it is also one of the most commercial. Still fabulous! 8/10
ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES - this track has such a great chorus and the vibe to the song is totally cool! Potential single! 9/10
VIRGIN SEXY - another totally funky track. The reference to Freddie Kreuger works SO well as does the text me bit! 10/10
SHAPE - took a while to grow on me but I really like it now. The verses are really nice and Sting's voice goes really well with theirs 8/10
JUST DON'T NEED THIS - great great great. Love the verses, love the chorus, love the bit in the middle. 9/10
NO MAN NO CRY - this track is cool but not outstanding. The verses are actually better than the chorus but it's still a catchy number! 8/10
SWITCH - totally fab track! Great chorus and love the music! 9/10
MORE THAN A MILLION MILES - OK, if I could give 20 out of 10 to a song I would give this 25!! My personal favourite on the album! Love the guitar riff and the chorus is fantastic. Great garage-style track with a ballad vibe to it. Even the rap works! Classic!! 10/10
BREATHE EASY (ACOUSTIC MIX) - this is a really lovely song. The lyrics are SO nice and the girls voices sound great on it! 10/10
ROUND ROUND (ALTERNATIVE MIX) - a good mix of a great song! 9/10
Go buy this people!!!
