Many problems installing on XP Home edition2
I experienced a lot of the problems described by others here, with my laptop freezing every time I connected an ipod. I'd followed all the installation instructions, installed the driver from the cd, updated my drivers and windows xp, also installed the driver pack from the web site (http://www.belkin.com/support/download.asp?lang=1&download=F5U222&mode=) but nothing was happening and it left me very frustrated.

In the end I tried their UK support number, 0845 607 7787 - you have to dig around a lot on their site before finding it which doesn't help. The technical support finally helped me out, and the fix involved going into device manager, selecting the entries related to the card (the ones mentioned in the manual, e.g. "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller") and right clicking to update drivers but choosing 'select from a list' instead of searching for the driver or using the cd, then 'don't search, I will choose from a list' on the next screen - the belkin driver appears as an option on the subsequent list, then you select it, hit next, and it installs properly. This process forces the card to use the belkin drivers instead of the default hardware ones it was using which weren't doing the job. I have no idea why they don't include this on their web site or in the manual, the person I spoke to admitted as much.

So, it's working now but been a massive waste of time trying to install it.

Great idea - when it works2
I had a few problems when first installing the card, even though I was running Windows XP SP1, I still had to download the drivers from the Belkin website.

This product works fine under Windows XP Pro, the data transfer speed is significantly faster than that of USB 1. However, on my Windows XP Home laptop, when I have my external hard drive plugged into the card and I try to open a file my machine freezes and I am forced to reboot! Not particularly helpful, and the manufacturers website has so far given no clues...

Works Perfectly If Used With Mains Power And New Drivers!4
I just received this item and immediately ran into problems with it, but they are easily solved!

I installed the card onto my Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 Laptop using the instructions and CD provided with the notebook card. The first problem i came across was that most devices that are not externally powered such as usb flash drives and floppy disk drives may not work unless you plug in the supplied AC Power lead, without it the card simply did nothing when i plugged in certain BUS powered devices.

Once the power lead was connected and i tried again i ran into a second problem. The card now detects the devices you attach to it and attempts to installs them, but locks the computer making it completely unresponsive in the process. I got out of this by ejecting the card and removing the attached devices from it. I then reinserted the card and it went be back to normal as if it never happened! This problem has now been completely overcome by downloading and installing the drivers found on belkin's support site (http://www.belkin.com/support/download.asp?lang=1&download=F5U222&mode=). After i installed these drivers the card worked perfectly and even allows devices to be connected through a USB hub, increasing the amount of USB 2.0 Sockets on my laptop!

So if you are intending to use this at your desk somewhere whilst plugged into mains power as i am with externally powered hard drives and a hub etc. then after the new drivers go on you should have no problems. Luckily my laptop has USB 1.1 sockets built in that i can use on the move, which i am happy to use with flash drives because the files on them won't really be big enough to notice much difference in speed and i will need the PCMCIA slot for my wireless card, but if you intend on using this card on the move with usb flash drives etc. then it's not really the way to go as it will simply ignore most of the stuff you plug into it without mains power.

    Hope this helps!
