Amazon.co.uk Review
Conker the squirrel is one of the more unlikely video game mascots around. In Conker: Live and Reloaded he's revealed to be a foul mouthed, money grabbing boozer – which is not quite what you'd expect from his cutesy cartoon looks. Created by Rare (makers of Donkey Kong Country and Perfect Dark) the single player mode of the game is little more than a special edition of the original N64 game Conker's Bad Fur Day. The multiplayer mode though has been massively expanded and is the real focus of the game.
The only multiplayer mode that has so far been shown in detail is the very Battlefield 1942-esque "Blitzkrieg" mode. Viewed from a third person perspective the game has multiple character classes, various vehicles to drive and is playable for two teams of up to sixteen players. Although the controls and combat are very easy to pick up there are a number of obvious problems with the game as it now stands with characters moving extremely slowly and unresponsively. The graphics are also poorly detailed, belying their N64 origins.
It'd be foolish to disregard the game until the finished version is seen, but the fact that there seems to be more that is old than new is certainly worrying – especially when the original single player mode was very much a case of style over substance. Still, the other multiplayer modes (some of which, like Heist, are also taken from the original game) may help to sweeten the pot and make this one of the must have Xbox Live titles. --David Jenkins

A Mixed Bag
This game could have been so much better, but is over shadowed by annoying game mechanics. The main problem is that there is no story, the introduction shows conker getting drunk in a bar, walking home drunk, passes out and then wakes up in an Alice In Wonderland style world. There is no explanation as to why or how conker ended up there. The actual story is really not that important in games, especially a light heated game like this, but if this results in there being no actual overall goal then this is a big problem. You do not really know what you should be doing, you have areas with tasks to be done which mainly result in finding cash (which can not be spent however) and as a result you find yourself constantly trying to get into the game, you do not really get the feel for the game which is a major problem. Another problem is that around half of the tasks show no clues as to how to solve them, resulting in moments of tedious searching as to what to do next. While the majority of the game's character uses toilet humour, over the top gore and highly elaborate innuendos, these are unnecessary strongly evident, which really to some extent cheapens the overall style of the game, though this may suit other players more than others.
There are glimmers of light peering through the shadows however in that there are some really classic moments such as the battle with the mightypoo and the barn fight with the fork, but these are too evidently few with the remainder being more monotonous rather then enjoyable. There are also movie spoofs which adds to the game's charm such as the "Terminator", where attacking a creature reveals to be a T-800 of sorts, complete with Arnie voiceover. There's "Saving Private Ryan" involving to aid the attack in the D-Day landings of sorts and more such as the "Matrix", slow-motion gun fighting in the office building from the first movie. The sound is of a very high standard, the voice acting is full of intent with humorous accents and there's the sound effects with strong crisp sounds (A blade slicing into Conker really makes your teeth clench).
The graphics are one of the best on xbox with dynamic lighting, sharp and detailed graphics and a strong lighting palette.
The majority of the gameplay is completing tasks and puzzles with small sections of shooting, a welcome variety with the latter being the most enjoyable.
There is also an multiplayer section included which is Xbox Live enabled, these are only team based games however and are also suspect to annoying mechanics such as unbalanced character classes, small acknowledgment of hitting targets, highly difficult aiming using the sniper rifle and a ugly heads up display. This can start to be reasonably enjoyable once the problems are tolerated.
Overall this is a good game with great aspects mixed with bad aspects, enjoyable in places and monotonous in others but the really disappointment is that this game could have been so much more.
Xbox live makes this game a keeper
Unlike some (read that as most ;o) of the reviews on here i've actually played this game (its about time amazon stopped people posting reviews on games that havent even been released at the time of posting) but i digress.
This game is two separate entities; first theres the redone (and obviously improved) classic n64 game 'Conkers Bad Fur' Day. This game revolves around you playing the squirrel of the title making your way through a land populated by some weird and strange creatures facing challenges to overcome. I never played the original on the n64 (the 2nd-hand games were always overpriced) so i cant compare the two content-wise, but it is apparently a true port of the original with added bits here and there, but the expletives in this new version have been bleeped out, unfortunately.
The second game, which makes this game worth getting just by itself, is a multiplayer game. The premise is that you're part of a team of heroic Squirrels (or the evil Tediz) and as its team-based you have to work with your colleagues to either reach an objective, or stop your opponents reaching that target. Like most combat/multi-player games there are different classes to choose from; sharp-shooter, grunt, sneeker, flamethrower, etc, each with a different weapon and abilities. The graphics are beautiful, the speed has been excellent (even with a screen full of action), and i've not noticed any connection issues whilst playing online.
And just as in 'Fur Day' there are deleted expletives aplenty. The action can sometimes be frantic and you will at some point end up killing one of your compatriots in the fog of war, and no doubt they'll politely call you a $&!t for doing so.
But just incase you arent online and will be playing solo, then you can campaign against the computer controlled bots (which can be configured, toughness, number of, type, etc), which can be just as challenging as a real, human opponent.
The Xbox incarnation of Conker is a game well above the average and with the Live content thrown in its just too much fun and shouldnt be allowed ;o)
Simply the greatest N64 game comes to Xbox in enhanced form!
Make no mistake about it, Conker is the greatest game on the N64 (along with Zelda OOT anyway). Rare's best game, was unfortunatly released late in the 64's life cycle and as such was not played by many. I can tell you right now, that this is 5 star material. It is the N64 game with super enhanced graphics and added online multiplayer.
This is much less of a "fetch quest" than previous RARE titles and is all the better for it. There are no levels, no complicated button schemes, no repetitive dialogue. Even the game-cliche of extra lives is cinematically handled. When Conker kicks the bucket for the first time, the Grim Reaper, his name is Greg, explains that squirrels, for some reason, have as many lives as they want. They just have to collect little extra lives in the form of red squirrel tail icons. Not once did I find the game boring or dull and not once was I playing just to complete it. I was playing to see what the game would throw at me next.
The story goes as follows; Conker has had a hard nights drinking at his local pub (in a very Clockwork Orange esque manner) and awakes with a hangover. The goal is simply to get back home in order to "get some kip". And so Conker's journey begins, but of course its not all straight-forward...The single player game is utterly compelling and by far the best platformer I have ever played (Mario 64 dosen't come close). The movie parodies are the star of the show, watch out for such ones as The Terminator, Alien, The Matrix and Dracula in particular plus many more. These are brilliant and, more importantly, flow seamlessly into the story.
Its long, very funny and features some of the best platforming you will find. The encounters are extremely memorable (one of my favourites includes an opera singing POO monster where you have to throw toilet paper into his mouth! Its genious when you see it trust me). The voice acting, but more to the point the dialogue, is top-notch and the whole thing has a distinctly British feel to it - more-so than any other RARE game.
Is it perfect? Well, not exactly, the N64 game failed on two issues. The big problem was the camera. It was just pointed too low and was awkward at the best of times. Less of a problem was the obvious limitations of the N64's graphics. Thankfully both these two issues are being fixed for the Xbox game.
Expect this game to be rated 18, it features alot of swearing, some blood, and the odd bit of nudity. However, the game isn't great just because of its transgressive content, its great because of its great game-ness. Conker is not an immature game for mature audiences - it's a crafted title with an agenda. Its a #@&%!$# all time classic which everyone should play. You will absolutely love the single player game. The multiplayer may not be anything special, but who cares when the single player is as good as this. Could easily be the best console title of 2005.
