Excellent Webcam
After trying out a couple of Creative NX cams I tried the Logitech QuickCam Zoom. I was really surprised at what you get for around 40 quid.

PROS:

Excellent image quality - the focus range is wide and the image is sharp and clear. The lens assembly on this cam has been well designed, the thread used for the focus is fine and has no slop whatsoever - it won't suddenly shift annoyingly if the cam gets a knock. The image is really clean too - sharp right to the edges with no colour fringing (chromatic abberitions) on contrasting objects anywhere in the frame - whether focused or not.

Built in microphone with software gain control is handy.

Software allows image adjustment (zoom, brightness, contrast, white balance, frame rate, gain) even whilst the cam is capturing live video within an application.

Cool chrome visor that flips down to cover the lens to ensure privacy. The visor can be easily removed.

Shutter button on the top of the cam lets you use it as a digital camera.

The base can be easily taken off, and surprisingly the threaded hole under the ball part of the cam is exactly the same size as a standard camera tripod mount - this cam can be mounted on a tripod!

CONS:

The image seems to have a slight 'un-sharp' filter applied to it. Although it is not imposing it would have been nice to have the option of disabling it.

Sometimes it can take up to 5 seconds for the cam to start or for the image adjustment setting controls to appear.

The shutter button only seems to work within the QuickCapture utility to take photos - I expected it to fire up the software automatically when the button was pressed when no applications were running.

Conclusion: If I lost or broke this cam I'd have no hesitation in buying another one. 5 star *****

The Logitech QuickCam Zoom is yet another quality product from Logitech, I installed this product on a Windows XP system and after having problems with other makes conflicting with my TV card I was a little concerned the same would happen again.

The smart looking webcam comes with a handy 2.1 metre USB lead which made locating it much easier than other models I've had in the past. The whole installation process was very easy with minimal prompts however it's maybe worth noting you are required to install the software and drivers first. After restarting the computer I was prompted to connect the webcam to the pc, automatically Windows detected it and completed the installation.

Setting up the software settings was also made very easy being able to adjust colour, white balance and many other settings along with being able to enable or disable the smart "face tracking feature", the face tracking is a very smart idea although different at first and strange to see it accurately follow your face as you move and automatically zooming in and out to ensure your face is correctly in frame.

The picture quality is good for a webcam although sorry its not good enough for photo's other than fun quick snaps, the type you take, show once and then delete, located on the front of the lens is a white ring which allows you to manually adjust the focus and a cover which slides over the lens to protect it and to allow for those moments of privacy.

The built in microphone is very powerful and produces very clear results, in fact it is that good I've removed my head set and sole rely on the Logitech QuickCam Zoom's built in microphone, however I must point out unless you are in a completely sound proof room it wouldn't be suitable for use with talk n type programs such as Via Voice etc as it picks up everything in the room very clearly.

All in all this is a very clever good looking webcam at a very sensible price and one to go for.

i was very impressed with this camera. the frame rate makes it very smooth and the face tracking is unbelieveably accurate. i have used other webcams with a microphone and not been satisfied with sound quality, but this is far better. the icing on the cake is its design, the silver finish is tops and i recommend this to anybody who wants a good looking webcam that performs to a high standard and is easy to use. installing it was straight forward, i use xp and all i had to do was install the software and restart the pc, connect the webcam and it done the rest. a top buy. *****
