Amazon.co.uk Review
Although Hilary Duff's first album is titled Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen "Lizzie McGuire" persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. To her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's Let Go. They give the actress's singing some attitude and grit, as on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday" and the cleverly conceived "The Math", complete with heavy-metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age of 16, she's much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki
CD Description
Better known in the UK as her TV character Lizzie Maguire, actress and singer Hilary Duff releases her debut album 'Metamorphosis'. The album, a mix of pop rock numbers, has seen Duff compared to fellow pop singers, Avril Lavigne, MichelleBranch, and Britney Spears. The single 'So Yesterday' is also included.
Customer Reviews
Exactly what I expected
I bought this album simply because I found it cheap and because I think Hilary Duff is cute with a capital Q - it was exactly what I expected. It's sugary pop - but it's good sugary pop. She has a good (if unspectacular) voice, but she carries the songs very well. If you like pop which doesn't pretend to be intelligent, that's just feel-good happy music - then this is a great album. Who cares if the songs aren't complex? - Simple tunes are so much harder to write, and this album is full of wonderful simple, happy tunes. Personally I think Avril Lavigne is the perfect blend of pop-girl and rock-chick, and Hilary is more on the pop side. You'll probably like this album if you like Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch etc. My favourite tracks are So Yesterday, Why Not, The Math and Where Did I Go Right.
Why Not? Give this CD a chance...
Ok! I am so annoyed... I have been reading BAD reviews for this album left, right and centre and it's not fair! Hilary deserves credit where credit is due! She is a beautiful and talented young woman! This CD contains all the elements of a good pop CD! It has the ballads, the fun, the dance and most of all the extra bit of pop for you to keep on listening to it time and time again! Not only is the quality good but the messages in most songs are quite positive... Come Clean- Talks about how you want to Come Clean and just start over (we can all relate), So Yesterday- speaks of how someone can't over THEMSELVES when you break up!!!! (we all know someone like that), Inner Strength- Amazing positive message for young people today in this sex driven world!!!! Speaks of how you rely on yourself!!!!! Why not?- a catchy pop beat with another positive message of being yourself and not doing what others expect! I could go on and on but I won't! Over all this album is BRILLIANT! It's sweet, fun with some catchy songs and all round positive messagE! Well done Hilary!
Actors can make albums!
I think every critic who thinks actors can't become singers, or singers can't become actors should eat their hats. OK, so some can't make the transitsion, but I think Hilary Duff has nailed both acting and singing.
I think Metamorphosis is a great debut album - because I'll certainly jump at her next album if she brings one out (which hopefully she will) I don't think ANYONE should turn their nose up at this album just because Hilary Duff is also an actoress.
I like this album because 1. I think Hilary Duff has a great voice, and 2. I like the rocky type feel to the songs which gives them a great edge to catch your attention.
THE GIRL CAN ROCK!
