Good, but a wasted opportunity3
I was completely taken by surprise at just how blown away I was by the Soundtrack to Taken (a pretty impressive feat when the visuals and story line are so attention grabbing already). I wanted to experience more of the soundtrack and was disapointed to find that there was no mention of the composer in the programme credits and no soundtrack audio included on the Extras DVD of the Taken box set. But my disappointment turned to joy when I searched Amazon and found that there was a dedicated audio CD of the score from Taken.

However having now listened to the CD, I again feel hugely let down because the one piece of music that I most wanted (and the reason why I bought the CD) was not included. I find this omission astonishing seeing as the piece in question is simply breathtaking and in my opinion was the best part of the entire soundtrack. I'm referring to the music played over the DVD programme selection menu on the first disc and again when Lisa is "walked home" safely by the spaceship on episode 6 (Disc 3). The closest this CD gets to that theme is half way through track 14 (Allie's Miracle).

I was also hoping that the audio CD would have fuller versions of the shortened versions made to fit the movie scenes, but this was not the case and most of the tracks are only about 2 minutes long. It would also have been nice to have variations on the themes, such as the solo piano version of the main theme music that was played during John's conversation with Sally Clarke while he was recovering.

This is still a good soundtrack CD and Laura Karpman has done a fantastic job, but I can't help feeling that (just like the DVD set) this CD is an opportunity that was wasted.

Taken ...3
This CD was delayed for several months after the BBC first screened the epic Spielberg series concerning alien abductions, the families tied together by destiny and conspiracy over 4 decades.

Needless to say, although it contains many of the music's 'highpoints' - in that much of the score represents the main action as seen throughout the show - it's a very disappointing release at approximately 50 minutes of music out of a show lasting nearly 20 hours of viewing.

The first release of music from Taken were the songs as featured in the series, then this appeared months later after some delay.

Unfortunately, although the CD contains a version of the end titles credit theme it doesn't actually feature on the CD itself.

Nice release (although would have gone for the other CD's cover - featuring the much BETTER Taken logo as used on the title credits and NOT Dakota Fanning's enormous face on the front!

I give it 3 because it has most of the better music but lacks the rest.

The CD also had a 'rushed' quality to it. And I feel it could have been much better presented.

Alas, this will probably be the only score we ever get from Taken. Not unless, in around 10 years time (as with some much older scores from popular tv/movies of their time) we get an 'extended' or 'deluxe limited ...' version of it!

Anyway, here's to Spielberg's next project 'Nine Lives' featuring (like Taken) families who delve into the paranormal but with each contact a new and evil menace closes in on Earth.

Interesting to see what music is written for that score.
