At the heart of the PlayStation 2 is the 128-bit Emotion Engine processor, which combines lightning-fast gameplay and unprecedented graphics power with DAT-quality stereo sound. The system was designed as an improvement on the original PlayStation's design; the disc-based software and Dual Shock 2 controllers will be immediately familiar to PlayStation devotees. Also, owners of the original PlayStation need not discard their existing game collection, because the PS2 is designed to be compatible with the software for the original PlayStation.
The PS2 builds on its home-entertainment value by doubling as a DVD player, which allows it to play thousands of feature-length movies and other video programmes, and outdo the VHS format in both audio and video quality. Most DVD movies allow you to select alternate audio tracks, supplemental footage and a host of extra features. Like the original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 also will play audio CDs.
The PlayStation 2 was designed with future expandability in mind. The unit comes with two USB ports and a Type III PCMCIA expansion slot--the latest standards in PC communications. It also comes with Sony's own i.Link interface, which can connect it to a varietyof high-tech Sony products--from digital cameras to notebook computers. Read our PS2 Hardware Guide

Customer Reviews
setting the record strait
I've got to say, to tell the truth, I'm fed up with the rubbish quite a few reviewers write on Amazon, I'm just telling the truth. As you can see, I gave this console five stars. Why? Because it is the best? Because it is the most powerful? Because I suck up to Sony? No. Because all three of the current consoles are brilliant. The PS2 has the widest selection of games, and plays DVDs as it is out of the box. The Gamecube has more powerful graphics and some great games such as the Mario series and Zelda. The X-Box has the best graphics and games such as Halo and Project Gotham Racing. Both the PS2 and X-Box have great online play with Socom being the PS2's best online game, and the X-Box probably with slightly better online play overall. All use different styles in design, the PS2 is sleek, and the Silver blends in nicely. The Gamecube is colourful and unique. The X-Box, is chunky it must be said, but otherwise looks quite good. But there are things all three have. They all have awesome graphics, brilliant sound, comfortable controller layouts and great games.
Next is price. The PS2 and X-Box cost the same, but are both rip-offs, and the Gamecube is more fairly priced, even after its competitors have dropped their prices. All the games cost the same on all formats.
Personally, I would just about be pushed towards the PS2, only because more people have them, so it's easier to share games, I'm used to the controller, it has backwards compatible games from the PS1, interactive games like eyetoy and probably most importantly because it gets GTA first! Having said that, I don't have a great PC so may have trouble with Half Life 2, which will only come out on PC and X-Box, so maybe that'll sway a few minds.
Admittedly none are as powerful as modern PCs, so maybe it's even best to get one of those... except they do cost almost ten times as much :(
One last thing. This silver PS2 is not limited edition or has better technology, so don't believe anyone that says it does, although it is true it has a quieter fan and an IR receiver.
The Silver PS2
Im going to cut to the chase here and keep it simple.
1. Out of the consoles, and I have owned all 3 of the newest (gamecube, xbox and ps2) for over around 2 years, the ps2 is a far out winner.
2. If you want a ps2 to 'do what it says on the tin', get a black one.
3. If you want a ps2 that looks exceptional as well as being a higher functioning model than the original ones, including a close-to-silent fan and integrated infra-red reciever that will not look out of place in any modern living room/bedroom with the ever growingly popular 'silver electronics', get the silver one, and get a silver remote with it.
poor product and poor customer service
I have bought 3 PS2 in 4 years. They barely last 12 to 18 months.
So keep the ticket and go ask for a replacement every 9 months or so. Or get ready to spend 120 £ every year.
This is all because of the DRE system that affects all of the sony machines: the drive gets crazy. They have known it for years, they have still not be able to fix it. May be because the PS2 are made in China.
It is a shame. The PS2 could be pink or yellow it would still be a bad product. Because of what is inside.
As a consequence, should you buy 10 games per year you would have to pay 40 £ + 10 £ because you will need a new PS2.
Sony are not helpful at all to provide maintenance. There is this phone line expensive deal system that leaves you helpless.
In the end it is up to the retailer to show their concern for the customer or not. Usually they hide behind the manufacturer.
