Best external hard drive available ?
Only a few days into owning the drive and so far, I'm delighted. I also have the Iomega 250Gb USB2/Firewire drive and this Maxtor beats it hands down.
Transfer times seem a lot faster ( it's a 7200rpm model, instead of the Iomega 5400rpm drive ), it's nearly silent in operation ( the fan on the Iomega is quite noisy ), you can manually switch it off ( the Iomega needs unplugging from the system, before it'll let you power down ) and the software package is excellent.
I like the fact that you can daisy-chain two or more drive together using Firewire, so you only need one free port on your PC/Laptop ( USB2 connections can't be daisy-chained, so you'll need more ports or a hub, if you have more than one drive ) and all the required cables are included.
One thing to bear in mind if you are using this on a laptop though. Most laptops come with a 4-pin Firewire socket, but the cable supplied is a 6-pin. You'll need to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin cable, if this is the case ( Amazon sell an excellent Belkin cable, that is ideal for this ).
Highly Recommended
Very easily installed - I used USB as I only have one fire wire. XP recognised it straight away & I was up and running in no time at all. The supplied software is very easy to use and has default settings as well as allowing you to choose what you want to back up in addition to choosing which day of the week and time (or not at all). The drive will manage itself - if it is running out of space it will erase the oldest backup etc. You can even tell it how much of the disc to use for backups so that you can use the balance for storing other files etc.
I didn't realise that 85 Gig would take several hours plus to backup as it also verifys the info etc!!
Ultra quiet in operation & really neat on the dektop - couldn't ask for more
How did I manage without it!
This little gem of a piece of hardware is a must for those of you like me work from office, home and on the move. Just a touch of the little blue button and it's away.. copying all your (updated) files. It can be configured to 'one touch' on any computer, has bags of space and just plugs into a usb port.
Simple to use software.
After spending a lot of time copying onto disks, I can definitely recommend this.
