Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Asphalt: Urban GT--which, unusually, first appeared on the N-Gage--doesn’t really use any of the DS’s more overt gimmicks, just the fact that, unlike the GBA, it can display fast, detailed 3D graphics. It’s a fairly traditional racing game, most obviously taking inspiration from Need for Speed: Underground, but also Colin McRae Rally and Burnout. The graphics are fast and detailed though and the course design surprisingly varied and interesting.

The Burnout "influence" (to use the most diplomatic turn of phrase possible) comes from the fact that near misses with other traffic increases the amount of turbo boost you have to use. There are a number of different game modes, depending on how much time you have to play, with one of the more interesting being the cop chase where you have to get various felons to pull over by keeping their cars in your sights for a set number of seconds.

The touch screen is used merely to display an admittedly useful map of the course and the stylus doesn’t come into play at all expect on the menu screens. The game does have a number of wireless multiplayer modes, though, making this a surprisingly comprehensive and enjoyable driving package. --David Jenkins

Good Racing Game for the Nintendo DS4
It is a good racing game for the DS in my opinion, but I felt it was slightly rushed in terms of graphics as the background scenery looks a bit blocky, though the smooth frame rate makes up for this.
Also the touch screen use in this game is not as good as it could have been.

I rate this 7.5/10 (But I wouldnt pay full price for this game)

Pros:
*Loads for Real Brand Cars
*Choice of Locations
*Career Mode
*Smooth Frame Rate

Cons:
*Graphics feel slightly rushed
*Touch screen limited to menu navigation.
*AI limited

Good to play out of the box4
I purchased this game secondhand in the US (sans manual). First impressions were fairly good, the graphics although at times make it occasionally difficult to see the non racing cars in the lanes ahead, are smooth and never noticed any jerking of any kind. Quite unlike Driv3r on the GBA!

The engine sounds are a bit mundane, they do the trick however. It seems like there are only four or five engine sounds in total and they alternate in each car.

The AI can be extremely frustrating at times, especially on the last few championships. It however can make quite silly mistakes - like when driving at 200mph straight into the back of a truck (seems there's no detection algorithm thingy).

The music is alright, the option of being able to change music tracks in the pause menu is quite nice.

My only gripes really are the lack of damage to your car (i have been playing flat out on the pc and am a bit spoiled). Also the edges of the track are very much defined, you scrape as if the verge is a wall. If you purchase a new body for your car you can't switch back to the original shell - you have to change to another gaudily-decorated one. With the large SUVs and the smaller cars the sports suspension options alter the handling but don't reduce the body roll, which can be a bit annoying when rocketing about in a Hummer H1 :)

Overall, great game for the casual racer. People who enjoy more in-depth racing may wish to try before buying.
