A fun piece of kit!
This tardis money box is a great item. I have one on my shelf which is storing all my loose copper change, and my 3 year-old nephew enjoys playing with one as his new toy (apart from being fascinated by the flashing light and speech, he understands it is a money box and is keeping money in it also - so in this respect it has also proved educational).
It is made of a hard plastic outer shell with cardboard used for the interior decoration with money slot, so I think it would survive a few accidental falls to the floor.
The one thing I do have to mention is that there are 2 versions of this toy - the one shown by Amazon here is the initial Eccleston Doctor release - this takes the LR44 button-sized batteries which can be hard to find (although Maplins Electronics had some under the name 357X). The speech and tardis landing sound on this release seems to be of poor quality though - very tinny and highly compressed. The button battery power you are looking for is 1.5/155v and as well as LR44 and 357X, the following ones will also work: G13, A76(-1), PX76(A), 675, V13GA, L1154, RW82, D303, 113150, SR44/W, D/V/SP357, 1166A, GP76A.
The newer release features the Tennant Doctor and contains speech from the "Christmas Invasion" special. The sound quality is much improved - it sounds clearer and louder; also the hard-to-find battery problem is solved - this version no longer needs LR44 batteries but much easier to find AAA ones instead - 3 of them needed altogether.
They are both worth getting in there own right, but if you only want one, go for the newer Tennant version for ease of battery finding and better sound quality.
Good toy...when you finally get the batteries!
I recieved this Doctor Who money box as a Christmas present and I like it (yep, I'm that sad!)
However, as stated in other reviews, the batteries were extremely hard to come by. I looked everywhere for them and have only just tracked them down. Had it been a Christmas present for a child, I can imagine the disappointment at being unable to play with the toy. I can also imagine the frantic chase parents would have had to do on Christmas Day when they realised batteries were needed. As the batteries aren't a particularly common type, they should really supply them.
The actual toy, however (once you have the batteries!) is excellent. When activated (there's a switch on the bottom), it makes the sound of the TARDIS materialising and the light on top flashes. (in fact, this can be a little worrying if you have money in it! You're almost convinced it'll disappear.) When opening the doors, you hear a phrase from the TV show, said by either The Doctor or Rose. So far I've heard five different phrases. I'm not sure if there's any more as it appears to be random.
All in all, the toy is really good but I would make sure you check the batteries before buying any toys by these makers.
The Tardis Rocks
I would just like to say that this is a must for all Doctor Who Fans...forget that it's a money box, that is just a bonus-i finally have somewhere to store my 2p's. The true awesomeness of this product is that finally they have produced a tardis toy that makes the legendary take off sound. If like me you are just in awe of the vision of the famous blue box, I can just sit there and look at it and it gives me a buzz, you simply must buy this item. Turn it on and the take off noise starts and the light flashes...truely genius...buy now!!!!!! Don't worry about the batteries, they are available from most stores....well worth the money!!!!! Just remember to turn the box off when you are not using it, this will make them last longer. Durability??? If you want it as a decorative feature it will be fine...if you give it to a child with a hammer...then it might break. Educational value????..everyone needs educating about Doctor Who....this is the ultimate Tardis model...Buy Buy!!! ....Bargain!!!
