Patience Is The Key4
I bought Sniper Elite a few weeks back. The first thing I want to stress about this game is that, if you are looking for a fast paced, run and gun shoot em up then look elsewhere. Sniper Elite is all about patience, much like sniping basically. The game is set towards the end of WW2, you play an American OSS agent, posing as a German soldier against the Soviet Empire. Your job is to prevent the Russians from gaining access to the secret weapons in and around Germany, the A Bomb being high on the list.

The secret of this game is that you must check your surroundings with your binoculars and your scope before you make a move. That means checking windows, doorways, rooftops and wreckage, to name but a few, for enemy soldiers before you decide to move through the open. If you do not then you will be shaking hands with mr dead very quickly, trust me! The levels are quite short but due to you having to take your time they do last well. The best thing I love about this game is the kill shot camera. If you shoot an enemy with your rifle, such as a head shot, the camera will follow the bullet in slow-mo right up to the moment of impact and you will recieve a distance and award rating accordingly. I once got 178 meters, covert head shot but I haven't been able to do it again.

The graphics are okay, sharp and realistic and the environments, while contained, seem so vast, especially when you use your binoculars for spotting. You can customise the game to elliminate the gravity and wind effects so your bullet will not fall or stray over great distances but this will not let you gain scores. The only down side is that their is only the campaign or net play functions. their is no single player deathmatch options nor challenges which does make the game seem very limited. Once you've completed it and have no internet connection there's nothing much to keep you coming back.

If you like strategy more than action then this game is a must. You will often be placed in a situation where you will have to choose how and who to elliminate as if you get into too many open firefights you will be dead.

Again if not sure try before you buy!

'A new era for action gameplay'5
This game allows the player to make it as realistic or as unrealistic as they want. The customization allows easy or challenging game play. Sniper elite is one of the very few games where you have set objectives but you can approach them in any way you want to, also very few games make the enemies not revolve around the player, i.e. they can come from anywhere! This provides the player with an incite into the controversial battle of the first stages of the Cold War. You need your skill with the controller to take out enemies with a variety of different weapons and once this is mastered, the opportunities to show off are endless. The most memorable moments in the game are the POF shots where a particularly skillful shot is pulled off and the camera follows the bullet from the gun to the enemy and this very graphic game play adds to the atmosphere of suspense. The missions are progressively harder and require different ways of playing the game. I highly recommend buying this game and would encourage others to share in this marvelous achievement.

The hardest A.I ever.5
The first thing I noticed about this game was how good the A.I is. It's incredible to the point of unfair. You'll find a good spot, line up some russkies and if you're good enough, enjoy watching the bullet (in bullet-cam mode) enter the guys head (oh yes, it's packed with gore). All of a sudden, his slightly healthier comrades have gone. Swing your scope to the left and you'll just catch a glimpse of them running behind a building. "Nevermind, I'll just wait for them to stick their heads out." A couple of minutes later you'll be wondering what's taking them so long. Suddenly 71 rounds are shot into you from a PPSh-41. Not surprisingly, you're dead and the camera whips behind you. So that's where they went.
Believe me when I say it get's worse than that. (Getting caught by an enemy sniper can be devastating.)

The above example is of the slightly harder difficulties. The good news is you can customize your difficulty, so you can have realistic effects (wind, body position ect) with easy A.I which does even things out a bit.

The missions vary from taking out a target to covering someone's escape, and you can usually approach the objectives how you want. You can lay tripmines to stop the enemy sneaking up behind you, throw rocks to lure an enemy out from his position, clear out a room with a well placed grenade, shoot a trucks fuel tank, place TNT in the road as a trap for tanks or infantry (snipe it as they approach it) and you can even get 4 for 1 kills with your rifle.

There is a reasonably large collection of weapons in the game such as the Mosin-Nagant M91 (Rifle), MG-42 (Machine gun), Silenced Walther P38 (pistol) and a Panzershrek (german Bazooka) to name but a few. You also have the option to search bodies for ammo and health packs.

The atmosphere of the game is incredible. You see planes going down, rockets being launched and screams can be heard in the distance along with constant gunfire and explosions, which can be used to mask your gunshots. (like Enemy at the Gates)

The multiplayer is good, providing you and your friend both have the patience and skill required. I haven't had the chance to try it online in a multiplayer deathmatch, but I'm considering getting the PC version just for the online mode.

If you have the skill and patience and you want a game similar to the film 'Enemy at the Gates' then this is definitely the game for you.
