Synopsis
Director Sydney Pollack explores what happens when the worlds of Dutch Van Den Broeck, a tough internal affairs cop, and Kay Chandler, a congresswoman embroiled in her reelection campaign, collide as a result of a plane crash that kills both of their spouses. When it is revealed that the dearly departed were engaged in a licentious affair together, the survivors are left with the daunting task of rebuilding their shattered lives.

Love Betrayed
If you are under 40 and have not experienced the 'Golden September' of married love then this film is not for you.
This is a very serious film showing the pain of a husband trying to understand both the loss of his wife in an aircraft accident and the subsequent realisation that she was also having an adulterous affair.
The film develops slowly and is about 20 minutes too long but you will be rewarded for watching every minute.
This film will leave you angry and sad but enriched nevertheless.
This film should be dedicated to Princess Diana
Politics and sex life do not work together very well in the USA as soon it gets off the very straight direct family-oriented lackluster public image politicians are supposed to respect down to the very last dot on the line. A supercop in Washington DC and a female representative in Congress from the state of New Hampshire get together due to the accident that drowns their spouses in a plane crash. This adultery on the side of the husband of the representative will ruin her life and career and the purely accidental and transient relation between the two survivors will become the only question that will seem important for the press. Something is wrong in this country and it has to be healed fast. The film shows the situation, its contradictions and the passion that will in fact be nothing but solace in a stressful moment with tact and great acting, with delicacy and an apology for the narrow-mindedness of the press and political system of a country which is supposed to be a democracy and does not guarantee the privacy of the private life of its politicians. That kind of wild hunting from some journalists is criminal and ten years ago it cost the life of Princess Diana under a bridge in Paris. That kind of trashy journalism should be outlawed and severely punished by our courts. The film seems clear about it: freedom still has a lot of battles to fight and win in our countries. The end of history is far from being close at hand.

Random script
One of the worst films I've seen in a long while. I can't understand how any producer at all may be tempted by a script which has no story. Sometimes it seems that a script-writer was truly desperate - trying to tackle clumsily some social issues, using overexploited characters - "good misunderstood cop" having personal tragedy, 'deep down romantic' business woman running for Congress, - both thrown into an out of the blue unlikely to happen under any circumstances romance spoiled by some scenes of car sex, sprinkled with some ashes from silver screen classic stories like "Avanti!" and even some shadows of "Brief Encounter", plus of course some stars which shall be watched by everyone anyway - although they look tired and somewhat aging... Background music throughout the film is disastrous, pauses in dialogues make one wonder whether actors remember their lines at all or are they supposed to play some drug addicts unsure of what to say next to make any sense. I may sound harsh, but I think authors of scripts like that need to be stayed well away from. What a waste of everyone's time and money. And what a shameful episode in careers of stars loved by many!
