PSP At Its Super Smooth Best!
Ok, here's 5 points for you:
1: The smoothness of outrun is incredible and the speed and graphics are breathtaking and its a joy to play.
2:......for about 1 hour.
3: The game is purely arcade and very shallow.
4: It becomes virtualy impossible at the latter stages.
5: If formula 1 was as fast and smooth as Outrun then it would never be beaten for a driving game on the psp.
I would recommend that you pick up a copy 2nd hand, it shows up the fact that psp driving games can be smooth and fast but most of the programmers just cant be bothered.
Outrun for the PSP
Personally, i was a massive fan of the original game. This was probably the main reason for buying the title. The 2nd reason is that despite plenty of racing games being out there for the PSP, there arent many that really do the machine or the genre justice.
Burnout is great, but not really much of a racer, as so much of your time is spent concentrating on putting others off the road. Ridge racer really looks the part, but when it comes to the driving physics it feels remote and a little robotic. So in my mind that leaves a pretty big space to fill, at least untill Gran Turismo comes out!
Now.... This game is not meant to be realistic! It is all about speed, impressing your girl, and basically getting from start to finish ASAP.
This is done in the same way as the original, by navigating several courses one after the other, all laid out in a kind of snooker ball layout.
This means that each race will last a little longer than a normal racing game, and keeps you interested as the enviroment is constantly changing, with no load times!
The driving physics are well designed, and while being far from realistic, offer a great deal of control, with the emphisis being on power sliding, and slipstreaming behind traffic.
The graphics remind me of Burnout for the psp. Detailed, fast moving but without the super impressive lighting and textures of ridge racer.
The Sound is great, with a full choice of cheesy rock ballads etc, totally suited to the style of the game. The only downside is that the sound of the engines isnt more prevellent, especially as the game is endorsed by Ferrari!
On the same note, the order you earn the ferraris doesnt make much sense, with the F50 being the first you can buy yourself!
Overall, this is an excellent arcade racer, worthy of a position in any PSP owners collection. Dont buy it if you are looking for a early substitute for GT though!
Graphics 8/10
Sound 8/10
Gameplay 9/10
Replay value 9/10
Overall 9/10
Outrun - Just like old times!
As already mentioned in previous reviews, this is merely for people who enjoy a quick and simple racing game you can pick up and play. It's also going to be appreciated by fans of the original Outrun, the arcade version and also if you love the tunes. There's no point posting bad reviews - look at it this way, Pacman will always be pacman, tetris will always be tetris and Outrun will always be great!!
The gotchas I found with this new Coast 2 Coast game for PSP and PS2 is that you have to earn miles to exchange with cars, tracks and music etc, so if you were expecting to pick up and admire all the cars straight away, that's a no-no!
Also, some levels can be easier or harder when played on the PSP or PS2, so if you really love Outrun and expect to get both versions, you can link your PSP and PS2 together by USB (not supplied with game) and upload your miles earned and also progress!
For quick and easy pick up and play with nice Outrun music and nostalgia - I recommend it! Not for realistic racing simulator fans...
