Synopsis
Named after a 1941 Alfred Hitchcock film, MR. AND MRS. SMITH is really its own ball of flaming wax, with enough sizzling chemistry between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to blow up a small building. He shows he is equally adept in comedy and action, and she manages to set new screen standards of bad-ass sexiness. It's impossible to dislike this pair, or a movie that makes being married seem like such insane fun. Pitt and Jolie play extremely skilled professional assassins who have managed to stay married for five years without ever realising each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on. Thanks to a genuinely witty script, the issue isn't who will win, but whether the couple will realise they are meant for each other before it's too late. Director Doug Liman was obviously the right choice for the material, having proved his ability to fuse engaging romance with knuckle-biting action in 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. The comedy is sophisticated and witty, the action is visceral and intense, and there is plenty of satisfying eye candy. Another plus is Vince Vaughn as a fast-talking fellow hit man who lives with his mother. The cinematography is by Bozan Bajelli (the genius behind Abel Ferrara's best mid-1980s work) who imbues each environment, whether it's the Smith's house, or the urban streets - with its own evocative colour scheme and feel.

Excellent
This is an excellent version. Not massively different from the theatrical release, but has just that slightly more detail that makes a big difference. Let me be clear, if you didn't like the theatrical version, you aren't going to want to get this, but then I don't expect anyone who didn't like the theatrical version to be looking at this really. For those like me who loved the theatrical release, this is better and you are going to love this even more!
I liked finally seeing where the section with the mini gun fits in (you get a glimpse of this in the teaser trailer, but it never got into the theatrical cut). Additionally the special features are useful if you really want to get a clear idea of how things come together on the set through to on the film.
This is the first definitive edition I have got, and I think its great! Will probably be getting more of these for various films.
A must for all married couples...
What married couple hasn't been here (minus the weapons, of course)? The discussion scene with the "Express Yourself" track in the background is genius! Should be mandatory viewing for all couples contemplating marriage!
Don't be a hater.
I enjoyed this film and bought this DVD to watch the alternate version. A lot of reviews for the theatrical cut complain about lack of chemistry, scripting and Vince Vaughan. This 'Definitive Edition', as Doug Liman intended, improves on all three. It removes the handholding opening exposition, pacing is improved to further explain the relationship between Mr and Mrs Smith and the added and extended scenes remove some of the silliness. I liked the silliness because ultimately I want to be entertained. This is an fun film with an intelligent script. Don't disregard it because your friends didn't like it.
I would have liked to have both versions of the film in the edition, that is a disappointment.
