Editorial Reviews

THE IRISH TIMES - June 22, 2007
Harry Gregson-Williams is known for his driving electronic scores
(Phone Booth, Man on Fire, Number 23), but his soundtracks for the Shrek
franchise have proven pleasingly uncharacteristic. Shrek the Third is a
bravura display of humour and wit that finds Gregson- Williams gleefully
plundering both classical and film music canons for inspiration and
exploitation. Sophisticated pastiches of Baroque, Romantic and Modernist
music are craftily juxtaposed with knowing nods to film scorers Bernard
Herrmann (Vertigo), Bill Conti (Rocky) and Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the
Caribbean) to create what is at heart a playful and delightful score,
filled with energy and surprise. Gregson-Williams's orchestration is light
and dynamic, with giddy strings, flighty winds and mock heroic chorales.

Album Description
Being king isn't for everyone--especially if you're a prickly
ogre who smells like the shallow end of a swamp. When Shrek married Fiona,
the last thing he wanted was to rule Far Far Away, but when his
frogger-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, Shrek is quickly fitted for
the crown......

Returning for this third chapter is composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who
contributes an enchanting score of wonder, magic, excitement and fun.

About the Artist
Early in his career, Harry Gregson-Williams held a position in the 1980s as a music teacher to pupils at the Amesbury School in Hindhead, Surrey, England (his brother Rupert, also a film composer, also taught at Amesbury School during this period).

He later taught music at the Guildhall School of Music, where he had been a pupil, and also for a short period in both Egypt and Africa.

In addition to scoring a number of motion pictures including Kingdom of Heaven, The Chronicles of Narnia', Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Shrek, Chicken Run, Antz, Spy Game, Man on Fire, and Team America: World Police, Gregson-Williams is also noted for his work on the popular video games Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. His arrangement of the original Metal Gear Solid Main Theme was just the first of many striking works he created for the Metal Gear Solid productions that involved both orchestral and electronic textures. His soundtrack for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty was generally considered a resounding success and an important step forward in blending the mediums of film and video game.

In his score to the Ridley Scott film Kingdom of Heaven, he introduced a mix of operatic and Middle Eastern themes. One track, Ibelin, was reprised as the closing credits theme with singer Natacha Atlas performing Arabic lyrics.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was released on December 9th, 2005. He has a contract to score the next in the series, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

His studio is called Wavecrest Music. Gregson-Williams was a member of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions (formerly known as Media Ventures). From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Customer Reviews

classical waste2
This is simply all the classical infill in the film extended to full pieces. This is NOT the songs.

To even the balance...5
It's not fair for this item to have two stars based on one customer review.
The score for this film is still wonderful. Harry Gregson-Williams is a fine composer and although the themes may be wearing a little thin to some after three reiterations of the Shrek film franchise, it's still worth a listen to any film music lover and Shrek fan. This is a charming soundtrack and still one of Harry's best; a refreshing change in style to his other later stuff.
