Synopsis
Comedian Chris Rock parleys his real-life childhood experiences into an endearingly family-friendly coming-of-age sitcom. Set in 1980s Brooklyn (where Rock himself grew up), the critically acclaimed EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS follows 13-year-old Chris (a brilliant Tyler James Williams) as his efforts at being cool are constantly stifled by his penny-pinching father, Julius (former NFL player Terry Crews), overprotective mother, Rochelle (Tichina Arnold, MARTIN), and annoying younger siblings, Drew (Tequan Richmond) and Tanya (Imani Hakim). To make matters worse, Chris is forced to attend an all-white school where his only friend is the equally hapless white boy Greg (Vincent Martella), ensuring that his peer interactions are just as exasperating as his befuddled, yet loving, family life. Rock himself provides the voiceover narration, while period-piece detail and an impeccable soul soundtrack add authentic '80s nostalgia. Whether you call it an African-American WONDER YEARS or a working-class COSBY SHOW, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS is funny, creative, clever, and full of heart--and one of the best television series to come around in quite a while. This collection presents the show’s debut series in its entirety.

Everybody Hates Chris is the story of Chris Rock's childhood, in Bedstie, Brooklyn, during the 1980s. We see his friends, family and his school, Colyone - which to Chris' amazement is mainly predominantly white. There's father Julius - he's a penny pincher; Rochelle, his mother, you don't want to mess with her; his brother Drew, he seems to get all the ladies and is lucky and little Tanya - always blames Chris for things that go wrong.
In this series we get acquainted with Chris' bully, Caruso, who does everything he can to get Chris; the rather crazy and stereotypical Ms. Morello who's got crazy ideas about black Americans; and of course, his best mate Greg Wuliger - a geek at heart.
Some funny episodes include the one where Chris has to learn how to play basketball, Fat Mike who nicks Chris' bike and he has to get it back before his parents find out; the crazy babysitter who goes off and leaves Tanya on her own and the food stamps Rochelle gets and can't get rid of.
This is a great show, Chris and Ali have done a great job of it and it's very funny. I especially like that guy who keeps asking to "hold a Dollar", he's funny, and the other characters - like Risky - they just make the show funny. Chris narrations are the funniest though, it's the way he says the lines and the timing - it's impeccable, plus the way he uses his voice - the dynamics are so funny. Plus I like the way they use cut scenes: when Tanya makes hot chocolate, Chris has this terrible vision of the house going up in flames, and then Rochelle walks in and sees it too.
This comedy works on so many levels and age groups, you'd be mistaken to think this is a kids show, or even a teen serial, it's a lot more than that and everyone can relate to Chris' treatment. I like the way he exaggerates Ms Morello though, but I can imagine this is not just something Chris Rock or Ali LeRoi plucked out of the air.
Definitely worth getting - plus there are some fine extras; like a day with Tyler James-Williams (Chris) and Vincent's School tour, both very funny.
Serious Sitcom
This show is funny!
I feel I should write more, but, just trust me on this one...
"This show is funny"!
I don't even care if they filmed it all, had Chris Rock come in and play narrarater and throw in a line or two like he's also doing commentary, I don't really care!
The show is really funny.
