Synopsis
Comedy double bill. In Red Dwarf: Smeg Ups, sanitation Mechanoid Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) presents a compilation of out-takes from the popular BBC2 television series. The footage includes the un-transmitted ending for the final episode of Series 6, a selection of 'bloopers' by the crew of Red Dwarf, and the answers to the ten most-asked questions about the series. In Smeg Outs, Kryten is joined by Lister (Craig Charles) as he presents another selection of bloopers, this time from the first three seasons, plus an extended mix of the 'Red Dwarf' single, 'Tongue Tied'. Each video is also available separately.

Great to have if you have bought "Just The Shows" so far
We didn't all buy the Red Dwarf episodes in their complete, extras packed form. So if you are like me, and have just the episodes, this DVD is the perfect companion to show the very funny out-takes and continuity issues highlighted by Kryten himself.

If you have all of the DVD releases with extras, you'll find very little here that you don't own already - but the links on this DVD with Kryten are very funny in their own right.

Just The Ticket
First Just the Shows Vols 1 and 2, now Just the Smegs, doing exactly what it says on the tin. The Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs, 50 mins each, plus the Series 7 and 8 out takes, and the NEVER BEFORE RELEASED broadcast version which features totally different linking routines by Kryten, Rimmer and Lister. (and Lister falling off the spaceship at the start, which is wicked)

If you bought the big series releases then you already have these outtakes, so all you gain is the links and the unseen broadcast material. The out takes work better as these specially presented programmes, rather than compiled clips like on the revious DVDs.

If you've been buying Just the Shows though, then this is a geat set of funny funny outtakes, with one of the best casts on TV, and its all gravy. And check the price. It's a low-cost item, with a hefty running time (2 and a 1/2 hrs!).

The Red Dwarf Smeg Ups are getting their own release, in "Just the Smegs"! BUT, this is for completists only. These outtakes were released on the series 1-8 disc sets, but differ in that they have the VHS introductions as opposed to the series-specific introductions used for the DVD, and they will also have the odd "in-between" segment featuring the cast that was not included on previous DVDs. So if you're a completist, you'll NEED to get these DVDs. I thought the series 1-8 DVDs included all the lame Kryten pieces somewhere along the line, but obviously not. Most of them but one or two were held back for this.

How many times can you watch the same outtakes? Because not only the VHS releases but the TV broadcast edit will be included. Just to make you feel sure you're getting everything. Yet there are no additional unreleased outtakes or rushes. It feels like just enough to make sure GNP line their pockets a bit more after the Bodysnatcher DVD comes out in October. Which, in case you didn't know, is a £10-15 release padded out with three series of Remastered so that you have to get four discs and pay £50!!
