The best since Near Dark
Good vampire movies are few and far between these days. Even John Carpenter's Vampires was only average and Francis Ford Coppolas Dracula never quite reached the heights it should of. So for me this is the best vampire film since Near Dark over 20 years ago.
An Alaskan town is brought under seige by a small army of vampires. The reason for this and why a human brought them to the the town in the first place is never explained. But once they arrive its a roller-coaster ride. Be warned it is extremly violent and not for the faint hearted. Unlike a few reviewers I thought the vampires themselves were very believable. Both incredibly powerful (at night anyway) and utterly souless. However some of their dialogue was very clunky and did leave a lot to be desired.
This has no relation to the gothic vampire movies of Hammer films and the like. Sure the vampires can't survive in daylight, but stakes through the heart and holy water are not part of the equation!
So a very entertaining and violent movie that I look forward to watching again soon.
Blooming Splendid
It just goes to show: when you think a genre has nothing left to offer, something new turns up and gives things a fresh twist.
If you are a fan of the short-but-sweet graphic this is based on they buy without fear - it is a fair adaptation of that. True, some elements have been lost or cut (or even added) but the basic premise and action (and ending!)is all there.
The great thing they have done is to keep it all spare but intense, witholding information until absolutely necessary, and giving the vampires a spin which makes them fairly unfamiliar. No preening Anne Rice dandies, instead they are somewhere between Christopher Lee in his prime and...the alien-quality of the 'Salem's Lot' movie vamps(?)
The moody, discoloured grey quality of the shooting and the stark abyss-black wearing undead makes it all great to watch. Sort of like 'Night of the Living Dead' meets 'the Thing'
Plus! I thought I recognised the guy in the cell - the creepy dude from 3:10 to Yuma! He's someone to watch out for in the future.
I think, one of the best vampire movies since 'Underworld'. If you are a fan of the genre, and want to feel there's still some hope left, you will be happy.
Does For Snow What Jaws Did For Sea Swimming
Very scary. No messing about, the set-up is done quickly and it's pretty much straight into the frightening stuff.
Sure, you're in your own living room and the pause button is only inches away, but even if you only have the most basic ability to suspend disbelief then this movie is gonna grab you, make squirm and keep you awake at night.
Probably best watched in mid summer. Only a few hours until dawn then, you see.
