Manufacturer's Description
See World War Two from three different sides -Russian, Allied and German –as you command entire armies and plot your battle strategies across epic maps based on real-life locations.

Men of War takes place across the globe during the height of World War II and features three different campaigns, each with their own unique units, vehicles and missions. From the Russian missions starring two student comrades fresh to the horrors of war, players are soon catapulted into massive battles with dozens of units under their command.

In addition to the in-depth single player experience, Men of War also unleashes a range of multiplayer maps based on the main missions along with action-packed 'capture the flag' and 'high-value cargo' modes.

Ignored this game? Your loss!4
As another reviewer mentioned this is a follow up to Soldiers:Heroes of WW2 and Faces of War. It's never going to have the publicity of Company of Heroes but these games provide a worthy alternative and if you have any interest in RTSs I'd say this is a definite must buy. There is no base building or resource gathering in MoW. Instead objectives usually consist of holding a defensive line for a certain time or achieving a particular objective to be rewarded with reinforcements. The scale of the battles has increased from the previous games so you will often take part in some truly epic battles against seemingly endless waves of enemies in some very well designed maps. The game doesn't hold you by the hand either, it's up to the player to use their own judgement and skill and actually probe the enemy defenses to find weak spots instead of being told "attack here!" and this makes it far more rewarding when you get it right. There were several occassions where i had to restart a mission because I realised where I'd screwed up but it was never really a chore to have to do so.
Graphically although the game doesn't seem much improved over the previous titles it's still among the finest looking RTSs out there with a FULLY destructible environment. Every building can be smashed, every tree uprooted and proper 3D craters appear where shells land that can provide cover for your infantry. The AI is also extremely good at making use of cover objects and pathfinding across a battlefield that quickly becomes littered with burning hulks and rubble is usually very good. Only occasionally do your soldiers get confused and run out in front of the enemy's guns although when it does happen it's very frustrating.
The only downside I have is that sometimes the micro-management of soldiers can get annoying. It's great that I can make my guys fix wrecked tanks for their own use but an 'autofix' option for when their own vehicles get damaged would have been nice. And having to arrange the inventory to be able to carry more stuff is tedious and should be able to sort itself automatically. Also the controls can get fiddly at times.
But overall I would recommend this game to anyone with an interest in the genre who isn't worried about spending a bit of time getting the hang of something a bit different.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the voice acting is some of the worst and the funniest I've EVER seen in a game. But you don't play games like this for the quality of the cut scenes!

The best ww2 game is back5
Preordered this and it duly came through the letterbox a week ago. Needless to say it was instantly installed on my vista lap top, which went without a hitch.
This game is the follow on to Heroes of ww2 and faces of war, and the whole thing now exudes polish, and feels much slicker than before. The missions are varied and often involve epic battles that really feel as if stuff is going on. The infantry units actually move with purpose towards you using cover, and running away if confronted with impossible odds. There is no jerkovision that was sometimes very evident in Faces of War, and you can zoom out a bit more giving a better veiew of the battle field.
enmies hide and take out your tanks with grenades, and you can't rush mob handed at the enemy and expect anything less than a maasacre. The command sytem has been refined and it is easier to reassign squads than before (that used to be a pain)
I love it, it is better than the original game, and way better than faces of war, and way better than Company of Heroes, although Tales of Valor may change that. The graphics are great, and everything is destructible. The sound when turned up is like a war going on in your living room.
If you like rts's you must buy this - it requires your attention

Worth the wait5
I've waited a long time for this game to arrive as the proper sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of WW2. Having just about completed the Russia level I can honestly say it's a cracker. The level in which you have to defend the port while the Red Army evacuates the civilian population on ships is one of the most intense gaming experiences I've had (and I've been playing since PONG, Atari & 48k Spectrum days). You have to really think on your feet as wave upon wave on Germany's finest comes over the horizon trying to annihilate you and the whole thing leaves you feeling brutalised.
In short an essential buy and one that sits proudly alongside the equally brilliant Company of Heroes series.
