Amazon.co.uk Review
Terminator Salvation restores some of the balance of huge explosions and emotionally compelling plot to the Terminator series. Set entirely after the nuclear assault that left the computer system Skynet in control of the world, Terminator Salvation follows John Connor (Christian Bale) as he grapples with both murderous robots and his superiors in the resistance, who aren’t sure they believe the prophecies that Connor is destined to save humanity. Into the midst of this struggle tumbles Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington, who would later star in James Cameron’s Avatar); the last thing he remembers was being executed in prison decades before. Baffled, he falls into company with Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek) and a mute little girl who soon get captured--but Wright then meets and bonds with Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood, Eight Below), a resistance fighter who remains loyal to the confused Wright even though Connor suspects he’s not what he seems--or what he believes himself to be. Terminator Salvation isn’t the astonishing synthesis of action and feeling that either The Terminator or T2 were. Despite this, Terminator Salvation has at least two skillfully orchestrated action sequences that will get your heart racing, and Worthington’s beguiling mixture of toughness and vulnerability gives his relationship with Bloodgood a genuine pulse. It’s imperfect, but compared with the hollow carcasses that most action movies (including Terminator 3) turn out to be, it’s worth seeing. --Bret Fetzer

Set in the post-apocalyptic 2018, with Christian Bale starring as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.
Synopsis
After reinvigorating the world of the Caped Crusader with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Christian Bale turns his talents to an altogether different franchise with this fourth film in the Terminator series. The Welsh actor plays John Connor, who joins forces with Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) to battle Skynet. Terminator Salvation is directed by McG (Charlie's Angels).

Terminator Salvation, Blu-Ray
I'm guessing this is a contentious films for die-hard fans of the Terminator series and you'll either like it or loathe it. O.K., I'll admit from the start I am fan of the Terminator franchise and although I went to see this with some trepidation after T3, I have to say I came away pleasantly surprised. As a stand alone film (which may the best way to look at it) this is pretty good and as part of the overall series it develops the story well and has something to add to the previous films. It will never be as good as the first two films, but I'm glad to say it's better than T3. Bale is good as John Connor, if a little wooden at times, but the real surprise was Sam Worthington who has the best role in the film. The CGI effects are good, but not overbearing and McG's direction was ok, but a little too jerky for my tastes. You do get some cheesy lines in this film and plenty of nods to the previous films, but nothing too excessive and most produce a wry smile rather than outright groans. The main problem with this film is that you don't care about the characters that much. In the first films you wanted to know what happened next and considered the lives of the main characters, but in this film they are just faces on a screen delivering lines. It's sad but true and the main downfall of this film. If you go expecting your typical Hollywood action movie you'll be fine, just don't expect anything of great substance or anything as good as the first two films and you won't be disappointed. 3.5 stars
Exactly what I wanted from a Terminator movie
I saw this film in the cinema and it was exactly as it should be for a Terminator film. A great action movie with plenty of 'human struggles against Terminator plot' and great special effects. I enjoyed the twist on the story that they introduced with Marcus (I think Sam Worthington did a great job!) and I loved that at last we get a proper look into the future post Judgement Day.
I've watched all the Terminators since T1 and was delighted when I heard Christian Bale was going to take the role of John Connor. I was never impressed with the Batman films until Batman Begins as Christian was the only actor to get both Bruce Wayne and Batman right and I was confident that he'd get it right with John Connor as well. I wasn't disappointed as I think he has introduced 'future John' well and I'm looking forward to seeing how the character and the story develop through the trilogy.
A wasted opportunity.
When I first heard they were making a fourth Terminator movie, my initial reaction was one of dread. Like many Terminator fans, I was very disappointed with Terminator 3 and I had to wonder whether there was really any point in making a fourth, especially as neither James Cameron nor Arnold Schwarzenegger would be involved.
But when I heard that Christian Bale would be playing an adult John Connor and that it would focus on the future war with the machines, I was optimistic that it might offer us something new in the Terminator saga and could actually be worth seeing. The result frankly is a bit of a mess.
The biggest problem with this movie is John Connor or should I say lack thereof. Given how they've spent the last 3 movies telling us how John Connor becomes the great saviour of the human race and given the fact they cast a noted and popular actor like Bale in the part, you would think that Connor would be front and centre in this movie. Unfortunately that's not the case. Instead the film primarily focuses on Marcus Wright, someone we've never met before played by an actor we've never heard of and you're left wondering, "why are we watching this guy?" It's almost like a completely separate movie playing parallel to the movie that you really wanted to see. I wanted this to be the Terminator movie that finally shows us John Connor being the great military leader that we've always been told he is, fighting the machines, saving humanity. Instead we get endless scenes of Sam Worthington's Marcus wandering around deserted wastelands looking lost and confused, which ironically is probably how audiences felt after watching this.
There are some cool moments, in particular the tanker chase scene with the Terminator cycles and the Terminator aircraft in hot pursuit. Also, I must admit the CGI modelling of the young Arnold Schwarzenegger (all 3 seconds of it) as the T800 is a fantastic technical achievement, even though they cheated by hiding his face in shadow most of the time.
But it's all a bit pointless. There's never really any sense of peril or real danger. For example, in one scene, Connor is able to easily infiltrate Skynet, the machine HQ, simply by hiding behind a piller as an oblivious Terminator walks passively by. One would think they'd have better security than to let the leader of the human resistance (who they spent the first three movies trying to kill) just stroll into their headquarters - hardly the so-called ruthless killing machines we've come to expect. In fact, the Terminators, so terrifying in the first two movies, aren't scary at all here and one wonders if they deliberately toned them down in order to get a more audience friendly 12A rating.
Overall what can I say? If you watched the other Terminator movies, chances are you're going to watch this too but it's nowhere near as good as the first two movies and in my eyes a massive wasted opportunity.
