Buy new: £4.99 / Used from: £0.86 A neat game with an awesome concept. You control your character with one analogue stick and your possessed scarf with the other, using it to stretch and defeat the 12 boss fights that make up the game

Buy new: £32.99 / Used from: £10.62 One of my faveourite rythm based games. With its challanging and original gameplay system and one of the best soundtracks around, this is an easy recommendation.

Buy new: £14.99 / Used from: £6.99 The last game from Clover studios, it's a real fun to play beat 'em up with a deep, highly customizable combat system bizarre cut-scenes that are genuinely funny throughout.

Buy used from: £1.44 A cell shaded shoot em' up with a real smart sense of style. Its anime style cut scenes frame the play really well and the story is actually pretty decent. Some great boss fights too.

Buy used from: £29.99 An amazing game, which delivers perfectly on its premise. The graphics and character animation are top class and the story, characters and gameplay all fit together so well.

 | Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2)
Buy new: £8.73 / Used from: £11.99 The whole series deserves to be here, but no.2 is the one that I remember most fondly. Perhaps the best video game experiance I've had. The last boss fight is amazing. Tons of replayability too.

Buy new: £14.98 / Used from: £0.74 The whole series is pretty solid. Takes Resident Evil to a new setting and makes it hack and slash. Always with high production values and engaging gameplay.

Buy new: £34.95 / Used from: £3.97 Pretty much perfect. A textbook in solid gameplay, amazing set pieces and every enemy is perfectly designed. A true classic and a must play.

Buy new: £42.95 / Used from: £18.59 A timeless on-rails shooter, ported from the Dreamcast. Genuinely has to be experianced to understand what makes it what it is. There really is nothing like it and it does what it does perfectly.

Buy used from: £34.95 The spiritual successor to ico its a high concept game that has you following a series of boss battles against creatures so large you have to plan a route to climb up them to take them down.

 | Persona 3 (PS2)
Buy used from: £29.49 Any of the Shin Megami series are well worth a try. Persona 3 probably offers the biggest changes to the generic rpgs that make up the market. Long, addictive, original and engaging.

 | Silent Hill 2: Director's Cut Platinum (PS2)
Buy used from: £5.46 Another contender for strongest story line in a video game. Capture an atmosphere well, genuinely creepy and a story that sticks with you.

Hard to find rythm game with some great tunes and a great sense of style and humour. Worth tracking down.

Buy new: £34.95 / Used from: £4.80 The best in the series. A huge jump from no.4 it offers quite accessable play which is quick and fluid. Great characters and a fair amount of depth.

 | Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution (PS2)
Buy used from: £4.15 Another quality beat em' up. This one's a needs a bit more effort to get the most out of it. The characters are all really varied to play as but perfectly balanced. A great single player campain too.

Buy new: £44.99 / Used from: £19.99 Very much doing its own thing, strangly satisfying roll 'em up with great presentation and music.

 | Wipeout Fusion
Buy new: £24.95 / Used from: £0.59 A high speed racing game that maintains its distinct racing mechanics. It can be off putting to those new to the series but when you get the hang of it its really enjoyable. Lots of content too.

 | Yakuza (PS2)
Buy new: £12.99 / Used from: £4.39 From the man behind Shenmue comes a beat em up with a good story that captures its setting (Tokyo) as well as any other game I've played. One of my personal favourites on the console.
