A tale of love, life, laughter and tragedy set amongst the tin mines of St. Just, Cornwall, in the 1800’s.
During the mid 1860’s the author, R. M. Ballantyne, spent over three months living amongst the mine-workers of St. Just. He incorporates into his novel many historical facts, producing an exciting and very accurate portrayal of Victorian tin and copper mining and everyday Cornish life.

Cornish Tin Mining St Just
Surprised to find a novel about Cornwall by RM Ballantyne. Enjoyed reading it very much & felt it conveyed what it was like in the tin mines at the end of Cornwall around St Just & out under the sea in the 19th century. It conveyed the hardships families endured, their strong Methodist faith but didn't shy away from writing about smuggling as a way of supplementing their income.
