Extraordinarily Bad
This was my first Fred Vargas novel. I hope it will be my last.
Wash This Blood... is one of the poorest crime novels I've ever read, and its astonishing that I managed to get to the end of the book without throwing it out of a window. The plotting is so horrendously contrived that there is absolutely no grounding in reality whatsoever. The characters are lazily described, and most of them blend in to one another.
There has to be better crime writing out there than this - I can't actually believe it has been published...
Brilliant detective novel
I'm hooked on Vargas, she is possibly the best crime fiction writer in the world at the moment. On holiday I read this after a couple of other crime novels, including Simon Kernick's Severed, and this just blew them away. Depth, humour, twists, you name it. Brilliant.
The cult of the weird
Why can I not stop reading Fred Vargas, when her books get on my nerves so much ? Do I enjoy being irritated as well as hooked ? This a bizarre phenonmenon as I know I will carry on reading further adventures of Commissaire Adamsberg yet I find Vargas's latest two books (in french 'Sous les vents de Neptune' and 'Dans les bois eternels') way over the top in term of weirdness with totally incredible, crazy plots. What was initially endearing and quaint in Adamsberg's character and behaviour has become systematic oddities, yet it is true that Vargas is for exactly these very same reasons, a highly unusual crime writer and you will meet in her books characters and stories that no one else could dream of.
A reluctant fan, then, but fan all the same !
