`The novel offers extraordinarily harrowing insights into the lives of Afghan women over the past three decades .... If he cut his teeth by writing about his countrymen, it is the plight of Afghanistan's women that has brought him to realise his full powers as a novelist'
London Paper Book of the Week
`Hosseini has stuck with his winning formula: compelling, unflashy storytelling centred around two sympathetic protagonists struggling in difficult times ... nothing beats a good story'
Customer Reviews
Count your blessings.
This is a wonderful book that took me on an emotional journey.
It tells a story of two very young women with different upbringings, dealing with the loss of loved ones and being left alone and vunerable in a country in the midst of a war.
It is a heartbreaking story with only brief glimpses of happiness, but the womens devotion to each other make this a must read book.
I have been waking up earlier in the morning before work just to read it!
every woman should read this book
Count your blessings!, you will read this and weep. There really are women living this life, even now in 2008. Remember them when you turn each page and feel their pain.
Splendid!
This book is more than just a compelling, thought provoking story; it is also very informative - giving insight into the history of Afghanistan and how the country got to the point where it is today.
The characters are well written and developed and feel like real people.
Their plight is horrific and heartbreaking, but the author writes in such a way that you know that there is always hope. A must read!
