'Traditional Caledonian Fare'
is featured in this book of the Salmon Favourite Recipe series.
'Keep gude company and ye'll be counted one o' them' - Scottish proverb.
'Cooking has always played an important part in the life of Johanna Mathie's large Scottish family and recipes have been handed down over the generations. Her grandmother who was brought up in Caithness, married a Wigtownshire farmer and the family were keen members of the local Scottish Women's Institution. This book contains a collection of the best in traditional Scottish fare.'
Paperback format with 48 high quality pages covering 34 recipes.
This charming little book opens with an alphabetical list of the recipes contained within.
Each recipe opens with the title, a note, the list of ingredients plus the method.
Metric Conversion tables are given on the last page before a complete list of the titles in the Salmon series on the inside back cover.
Interspersed with sepia photographs, my particular favourite being of 'A Highland Croft', alongside a hearty recipe for that OLD FAVOURITE, one either loves or hates - 'Porridge'!
Other recipes include:-
Black Bun
Butterscotch Meringue Pie
Clootie Dumpling
Cranachan
Creamy Finnan Haddie
Cullen Skink
Forfar Bridies
Howtowdie
Mutton Pies
Oatmeal Bannock
Parlies
Partan Bree
Scotch Broth
Shortbread
Stovies
Whisky and Chocolate Crunch
A great value range of recipe books
I own the whole series of these books and every single one of them contains a great selection of recipes.
If you are a basic cook like me, then these recipes are ideal. However, if you like to cook complex fancy dishes then these may disappoint you.
The ingredients used are everyday items that most of us will have in our kitchens and the layout is very simple to use. The majority of the recipes I have tried have turned out extremely well and my friends have all commented on the books and borrow them!
Each book has a paperback wipe clean cover which is very practical. The majority have around 48 pages and the recipes are in alphebetical order with an index at the back. Obviously these are budget books and you will not find any fancy photographs, however, the food is simple and easy to make and is very tasty!
If like me you become addicted to these fab little books then be careful as a number of recipes are repeated throughout a number of books, but at this price who cares!
One helpful thing to know is, that as Amazon only stock a limited number of these books, there are contact details in the back of each book so you can order directly from Salmon books directly.
Well worth 5 stars.
