Average customer review:Product Description
There are nearly 40 inhabited islands off the coast of England and Wales, and dozens of other uninhabited ones. Some are well-known commercial, financial and holiday destinations, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight; others are small, remote, peaceful and mysterious like the Farne Islands, the Scilly Isles or Lundy. But all the inhabited ones and many of the uninhabited ones are reasonably accessible, and this richly illustrated book provides the first ever guide to them all.
With details of their geology, history, flora and fauna, inhabitants and customs, it is also a practical book with information on how to get there, where to stay and eat, island walks and architecture, sites to visit, sights to see and details of relevant websites and contacts.

Review
a colourful and well-photographed first guide --Countryman
Western Daily Press, June 12, 2007
Julian has done a fine job on a coffee table book laden with
colour photographs and packed with details of the islands... attractive and
appealing.
About the Author
Julian Holland trained as an artist at Cheltenham College of Art before going on to study graphic design, illustration and photography. He fell into a career in publishing when he was offered his first job as a book designer for Readers Digest, followed by stints as a magazine designer before ending up as a designer and art editor for Dorling Kindersley. From 1977 Julian was involved in freelance book design and book packaging, until a close brush with the grim reaper in 2004 inspired him to change his career and become a full-time author and photographer, concentrating on his two favourite subjects of islands and railways.

WOW - what brilliant photography
As something of an armchair traveller, I was quite excited to see this book. Islands are something of a passion of mine, and I never realised there were so many within easy travelling distance of my own - erm - armchair!
Mr Holland's photography is spectacular; the text is clear and very informative (especially the natural history and "How to get there" information for each island); and the presentation is of an exceptionally high standard (I've read a lot of travel books!).
All in all, a beautifully produced and edited book. Highly recommended.
A fine pictorial guide to the off-lying islands of England and Wales
A fine pictorial guide to the off-lying islands of England and Wales. Julian Holland (who I have met at his home in Somerset) is a fine photographer and the book is pleasingly laid out with text over-lying many of the numerous very fine photographs to provide an easy to read and picturesque layout. He spent many months researching and photographing the islands and has since produced a fine companion book for the islands of Scotland.
