A highly innovative new book that will appeal to experienced climbers and beginners alike. The author, who has unrivalled knowledge of the Scottish hills, has chosen the 101 walks with great care. The book is divided into six sections: southern Highlands, central Highlands, Cairngorms and north-east Highlands, western Highlands, north-west Highlands and the Islands. All of Scotland's best loved and most iconic hills are included: among them Ben Lomond, Ben Nevis, the Cobbler, Ben Lui, Bidean nam Bian, Buichaille Etive Mor, Ring of Steall, Lochnagar, the Saddle, Ladhar Bheinn, Suilven, Arkle, the Cuillins and even Conachair on remote and mysterious St Kilda. A particular strength of the book is the author's very detailed description of the walks, the product of thirty years' walking experience in the Highlands and Islands. Cornwallis, a scientist by training, also provides fascinating insights into the geology, flora, fauna and wildlife walkers are likely to encounter as they wend their way to the summit. To complement the narrative there are superb 3-dimensional maps of all 101 hills/mountains, drawn by one of Britain's leading mapmakers, Linda Dawes. The maps are not only easy to follow but are also superb examples of the cartographer's art. Then there are the stunning colour photographs of each of the 101 routes, the vast majority taken by Graeme Cornwallis himself. Finally, the book is packed with useful information: route summaries/times, an overview map of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland's 'Top Ten', a glossary, translations of Gaelic names, and an index.
