Product Description

There have been many books written about boating, and many books written about boat angling – but none about owning and running a small boat written specifically with the requirements of boat anglers in mind. Boat anglers use their boats very differently from other boating enthusiasts, yet many of the fundamental principles of boat handling, safety and terminology are the same. On the other hand, some of the knowledge required is specific to sport fishing. This book brings together all the subjects of interest to anglers moving into the world of small boat ownership, or to the amateur boat owner.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author
I decided to write this book because I came across many questions on web forums asking for help on the basics of owning a boat. I realised that I had asked the same questions once, and it took years to find all the answers. There are many people willing to help, and there are countless books and magazines, but I have never come across a book as an introduction to boats written with anglers in mind. This is it.
This book was written as a "get you started" guide, so it provides the basic information you need to have on a range of topics. Many specialist books have been written on each area covered. Once you have a general grasp of what to do with your boat, and if you want to explore areas such as navigation, there are plenty more sources on the web, in magazines, books, videos and courses. I hope you will want to find out more.
Above all, have fun and be safe. Happy boating and tight lines.

From the Inside Flap
Compiled from over thirty years experience with boats and sea fishing by keen angler Neville Merritt, here is a book that guides anglers who are using their own boat through the maze of terminology and techniques that can mystify those new to the world of boating.

It will help you chose the boat that is right for you, and guide you safely though launching, mooring, manoeuvring in harbour and at sea, finding a fishing mark, anchoring and navigating safely home. It also explains the basics of weather forecasts, tides, the use of VHF radio and navigation, ropes and knots. To make sure you are prepared for every eventuality, it includes explanations of what to do when things go wrong, and how to stay safe and comfortable when you are out at sea.

Finally, it describes basic boat maintenance so you can add your own fittings and keep your boat in good condition.

Throughout the book, Neville has included tips and hints to help you make the most of your boat and enjoy your sea angling to the full. It will be invaluable to all owners of small angling boats

About the Author
Neville Merritt was brought up near the Blackwater estuary, and was boating before he could walk. After a near-disaster in a storm the family sailing exploits were curtailed, but he took up fishing very soon after. Neville caught his first real fish using a toy rod, and boats and fishing have been his passion ever since.
When he was a teenager, his father bought a Norwegian fishing boat in which they both learnt a great deal about boats and the sea. Neville bought his own boat as soon as he could afford one, and has owned boats ever since.
He lives in Hampshire with his very understanding family, and fishes from his boat whenever he can off the Hampshire and Sussex coasts. Neville is also a keen fly and coarse fisherman.

Angling Boats5
This book is a guide to owning and running a small boat for sea angling.
It covers from buying a boat, what types of boat there are, where to keep it with all the pros and cons of owning a boat. Also included is equipment required, both essential and others, safety, regulations, basic navigation, weather forecasts, VHF radios, ropes and knots etc.
In fact the book covers everything a novice boat owner needs to know to get started and maybe remind or update information that an experienced owner should know.

I read the book and I can honestly say I was most impressed with the content, layout, sketches and good drawings to make it clear what the author is trying to explain. I learnt a lot and I am sure it will be one of those books that are often used to refer back to when trying to find out some information.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to a novice boat owner, as there is not that much information available even on the internet and I am sure even some experienced boat owners would learn something from it.

A must for every boat owner5
Despite 40 years boating experience I found a lot of useful information in the book that was new to me. It was written in plain english and very easy to understand and will be kept in the boat for reference while at sea if necessary.Just about every aspect of boating for anglers is covered in enough detail without getting too technical.
If you are a new or experienced boat owner or even if you just crew for a boat owner occasionally I thoroughly recommend it.

Hard won learning!5
This book fills a real need. Amongst small boat fishermen angling skills are generally better developed that seamanship and boat handling skills, and this book does an excellent job of correcting that balance. Strongly recommended.
