The book includes soups and starters; rice dishes and pasta sauces; fish; meat; chicken and, of course, a selection of delicious desserts. From the ever-popular spaghetti with a quick tomato sauce to tagliatelle carbonara and a truly foolproof tiramisu, Aldo includes all the most popular Italian dishes. For a taste of something a little more exotic, why not try seared tuna Sicilian style, or rump steak paillard grilled with raddichio, olive oil and lemon dressing? simple cooking simply put5
a range of recipes some of which you will have seen before. I think the strength of this book is that it is so small (i.e. there's not hundreds of recipes) and so all it contains are dishes you'd actually want to cook and, possibly more importantly, those you can cook.

Unlike other cook books, Aldo doesnt just show you the finished product and give you instructions on how to get there, he also gives you photographs of what the dish should look like at various stages so this gives you some condfidcence that what you are doing is right.

If you've never cooked Italian before (and I have) then this is a good book to get you started - a book full of simple cooking, simply put !

Almost as good as Simple French Cookery4
I bought this on the back of Simple French Cookery and it has all the strengths of the "Simple ..." format - sophisticated yet straightforward recipes with lots of step-by-step pictures to follow, logical and helpful structure, suggested menus, a consistency of style and not so many recipes that you end up not knowing where to start.

As with Simple French, not only have I tried most of recipes in the book, a number have become regular favourites both for family dinners and entertaining.

So why only 4 stars and not 5 ? Well, I have a few minor quibbles:

- Some of the recipes feel a bit too similar to each other.

- The quantities (e.g. for dressings) are not always spot-on and leave you with excess unused leftovers.

- I refuse on principle to give 5 stars to something that purports to be serious cookbook, yet recommends using mayonnaise from a jar (it's not that difficult to make fresh !) and stockcubes (these have no place in any enthusastic amateur chef's repertoire).

- Aldo himself comes across as a bit of a smug celebrity chef rather than someone with a real passion for food.

However, these are merely niggles and should not put you off buying this book. I thoroughly recommend it - just make sure you buy Simple French Cookery first.
