Wonderful Wide World
Mine arrived in a used or repaired state - it had finger and scuff marks on the screen and base. Not nice for a supposedly new product. However, I managed to clean it up. I tried it out for a few days and decided to keep it - I think partly persuaded by the WS format which is seductive and a change in my circumstances. Amazon to their credit did quickly offer to collect it an refund me.
I found no bad pixels or backlight issues. Colour looks reasonably uniform across the screen.
It came with both DVI and analogue cables which is good since the analogue is optional and add another £[...] if you have to buy one.
I did have one other issue which is banding and whether the screen is 6-bit or 8-bit. It seems to be a 6-bit one but manages a convincing 8-bit via tricks - as do many many such TN lcd monitors on the market. I noticed slight banding when doing a gradient test connected using the DVI socket - I have seen monitors at twice the price fare much worse. However, plugging in via the analogue socket removes banding almost completely and provides a very good picture too. Text is slightly more crisp via DVI. BTW if you change from digital to analogue (turn off to change cables of course) you need to press the enter button (3rd from right) to get the monitor to recognise the change - else it goes blank and asks for the digital cable to be checked.
The onscreen controls are very easy to use and there are a few programs included on the CD which allow you to do any adjustment from your PC. Sadly no printed manual is provided - it's on the CD and Samsung's site.
For video it looks very good. Widescreen is so much nicer - seems natutral since we see a landscape world not a square one. Viewing angle is good too - most in an average-sized/shaped room would see it fine.
Games. No smearing or obvious ghosting. The 6ms sees to that. Half Life 2 and Guild Wars give excellent eye-candy in widescreen format. Older games like Quake 3 can be played in a window since they look odd stretched across the WS.
I would have preferred a black monitor but Amazon is only doing Silver/black. It looks good anyway.
I would have given 5 stars but for the very poor state in which it arrived.
Excellent
This is a beautiful monitor - nice high resolution, good colour balance. It comes with a DVI and D-Sub cable in the box.
One of the good features is the magicbrite button on the front - you press this and cycle through colour balances called Internet, Text, Games, Sport, Movie and a few others that I can't remember and it changes the colour balance appropriately.
Good value DVI widescreen monitor
Thankfully, mine arrived in fine fettle from Amazon, complete with anlaogue and DVI cables. The single sheet of printed instructions, being only technically in English, were a bizarre reading experience. The Samsung website was far more meaningful. The supplied CD allowed me to update the Windows drivers. I also took the opportunity to update my graphics divers from the ATI website.
The widescreen format is indeed seductive and everything seems fine when the monotor is used at its native resolution (1680*1050) via DVI. Adjusting font sizes in windows and IE helped my rather poor eyesight cope with the higher resolution. Brightness and contrast settings were too high by default but are fine when reduced to a reasonable level. No bad pixels found. Stand is height adjustable. Strategy games play well enough and look really fantastic if they support the native resolution.
Movies are fine too, again thanks to widescreen format. Good value for the money provided you have a DVI capable graphics card but I would have been happier if Amazon had dropped the price to its current level before (rather than just after) I bought it! Happy with mine.
