Synopsis
Tofu, seitan, tempeh, tofu, seitan, tempeh...it seems like so many vegans rely on these products as meat substitutes. Isn't it time to break out of the mold? Taking a fresh, bold, and alternative approach to vegan cooking without the substitutes, Dino Sarma brings you over 100 fully vegan recipes, many of which draw from his South Asian roots. Sharing his jazz-style approach to cooking, Dino also discusses how you can improvise in your own cooking with simple ingredients and how you can stock your kitchen to prepare simple and delicious vegan meals quickly. Whether you love tofu, seitan, and tempeh or hate it, Alternative Vegan shows you how to let the flavor shine through by cooking simply with fresh ingredients.

Innovative and tasty!
This is a vegan cookbook with a difference- it doesn't rely on meat substitutes and instead has recipes showcasing how tasty vegan food can be.
There's a very helpful guide to kitchen equipment at the beginning and it's great for beginners or experienced cooks alike. The basic recipes section really *is* basic, with few ingredients and simple instructions, but innovative ideas that work really well. Even the advanced section is easy to follow.
Variations are offered for many of the recipes if you dislike or don't have certain ingredients, and the author encourages you to adapt recipes to your own tastes rather than stick rigidly to the recipes, which is great.
This book is a great all-rounder, but particularly good for anyone with soya allergies or anyone who just wants a vegan cookbook that's a bit different from the rest. Highly recommended.
Cooking basics.
This book gives a great base for any cook, it gives you the tools to go on and create more fantastic food.
The recipes are simple and easy-to-follow, and the author likes to get you to change/improve the recipes to suit your tastes.
I bought this book for omni and vegan friends and it is loved by them all.
What are you waiting for........buy this book!!!
Tofu Free Fun!
I bought this book as it promised a change to the usual vegan fare that is repeated again and again in recipie books.
It made good on its promise - not only are the recipies unusual Dino avoids the repetitive list of ingredients some vegan books suffer from where you feel like its the same food every night but with a different name.
A crucial aspect of any recipie book for me is some sort of introduction to what you are about to cook - a bit of history of the dish, some facts about an unusual ingredient or how it came about if its a happy accident. Again this book delivers - its chatty, interesting and amusing.
There are no photos or glossy pages but the layout is fine and the only drawback I can think of is that at times there are absolutely no guidelines as to what measurements you are supposed to use. One recipie just says 'flour' with no indication as to what kind.
However (and importantly) the idea behind this book is that you play around and enjoy the dishes - they are a guide not a manual and you are encouraged to replace ingredients according to what you have in your cupboards or what you prefer to eat.
All in all an enjoyable read and some nice new ideas for me to try.
