In an increasingly complex and fast-moving world body language can be the key to success or failure; Body Language explores this unspoken language and shows us how to interpret the signals we receive and how to control the messages we send. Starting with such broad basics as first impressions and territorial behaviour, the book moves on to study the body signals we are likely to give out in specific situations, such as parties and social gatherings, the workplace, and sexual relationships. A look at deception, and the contradictions that can occur between words and actions, is finally followed by an easy-to-read, visual dictionary of body language, showing key gestures along with their meanings.

Customer Reviews
Ideal for Xmas!
'Body Language' is concisely yet comprehensively written; the information is presented in clearly delegated sections (such as how body language operates in friendships, romance and the workplace) and attractively complemented by helpful illustrations. The book not only informs the reader how to interpret the body language of friends, partners and colleagues, but also how to recognise and begin to use their own body language to good effect (for instance, how to appear confident when nervous). This stylishly presented book is an ideal gateway into understanding this often underappreciated mode of social interaction and communication.
Susan Quilliam's book caters for those who are generally interested in the topic as well as those who wish to gain a practical understanding of body language in their own everyday lives. The book's colourful, clear layout and unfussy but informative writing style makes for a highly readable combination - ideal for a Christmas or birthday present!
Good but basic
This is a good basic guide with lots of pictures. It's very easy to read. The one fault the book has is that it's not always possible to tell which figure in the picture the author is talking about.
Informative, insightful and revealing
Given the popularly quoted statistic that up to 80% of modern communication is non-verbal, this book is absolutely essential for those wishing to improve their adeptness at the art of both recognising and promoting the secret signals and impressions created by body language.
The secrets divulged by the book are twofold - they not only explain clever ways to project the particular image or impression you wish to create yourself, but also how to interpret the body language of others to understand their inner feelings and outward signals. As such this is a useful reference guide for a wide range of situations, from social gatherings to interaction in the workplace to relationships with the opposite sex, particularly upon first meeting and early dates.
It is a light, not too serious, easy to read, full colour guide with large, clear illustrations to leave no doubt as to the particular physical positions and effects Quilliam describes. A particularly enlightening and entertaining aspect of the book is its exploration of 'common misunderstandings', which demystifies the reader about the impressions we got from somebody's body language which we just couldn't believe turned out to be completely wrong!
The book ends with a very useful 'picture dictionary' of very specific body language such as hand positions and facial expressions which it may be very useful to rush home and consult after a night out or a flirtatious day at the office!
