Manufacturer's Description
This lens covers focal lengths from 24mm ultra wide angle to 70mm medium telephoto and provides a large f2.8 aperture at all focal lengths. Its design employs three aspherical lens elements to minimize spherical aberration, astigmatism and sagittal comma flare. The use of two SLD (The Special Low Dispersion) glass elements results in excellent correction of chromatic aberration and provides a high level of optical performance and 24-70mm F2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF has high contrast and resolution. The lens also incorporates Dual Focus mechanism. It is easy to hold the lens, since the focusing ring does not rotate during auto focusing, and yet provides a wide focus ring for easy to use manual focus. Since the front of the lens does not rotate, it allows the use of a flower shaped "Perfect Hood" and facilities the use of polarizing filters. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Customer Reviews

A pleasant surprise5
I mulled over this for a while, wondering whether or not to go for the Canon L series equivalent which would cost more than twice as much. I was also doubtful about the noisy mechanism reported on some reviews on other sites. In the end I went for this because it was relatively inexpensive.
And I have been very pleasantly surprised. I have been very pleased with the shots I have taken with this lens even in comparison to photos taken with more expensive Canon L-series.
I use it on a Canon 400D. I don't notice the reported 'excessive' motor noise at all. The lens focuses quickly and accurately (which is important to me for sports photography). Colours come out vibrantly. The lens also allows me to take indoor shots without using the Canon's overbright built-in flash.

Impressive quality5
There have been some bad reviews of the build quality from Sigma on the internet. I have to say that that is not (after 1 week) my experience of this lens. The build quality is very high and the functionality is superb.

A lot of peope make a fuss about the noise of the lens - but honestly if you are doing work in just about any area other than very quite nature work, this isnt an issue.

It does make a slight buzz when focussing, but about 6ft away you couldn't hear anything at all, and even when using the camera it focuses so quickly that I couldnt say I found it intrusinve.

Unlike Canon this lens ships with a hood, high quality case etc. and when I consider it is 30% of the price of the equivalent Canon (the L series) then for me there was is question - I will buy more Sigma lenses.

Great replacement for stock lens5
I took me a while to choose a lens to replace my stock lens that came with my Canon 350D. I now use a Canon 40D with this lens as my main workhorse. It is a fantastic lens, and produces crisp clear shots. The colour it manages to capture is amazing, and you don't need to enhance the colour of your shots in Photoshop much.

The focusing is fast and not noisy at all. Very happy with my choice.
