After a string of mediocre movies, director Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands) regains his footing as he shifts from macabre fairy tales to Southern tall tales. Big Fish twines in and out of the oversized stories of Edward Bloom, played as a young man by Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge) and as a dying father by Albert Finney (Tom Jones). Edward's son Will (Billy Crudup, Almost Famous) sits by his father's bedside but has little patience with the old man's fables, because he feels these stories have kept him from knowing who his father really is. Burton dives into Bloom's imagination with zest, sending the determined young man into haunted woods, an idealised Southern town, a travelling circus, and much more. The result is sweet but--thanks to the director's dark and clever sensibility--never saccharine. Also featuring Jessica Lange, Alison Lohman, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and Steve Buscemi. --Bret Fetzer
Synopsis
In Tim Burton's family film Big Fish, a wonderful storyteller named Edward Bloom (Albert Finney), who lives in a small town in Alabama, recounts tall tales of his wild worldly adventures. These are shown in flashback with Ewan McGregor playing the young Bloom. Wonderful special effects and vibrant colours that pop off the screen make this Burton film a much sunnier experience than his macabre gems Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. Yet his signature quirky artistry is unmistakable, and the movie benefits from crisp production values and a loveable, bizarre cast of characters.
Told through a series of vignettes, Bloom's stories involve a witch, a giant, a haunted forest, and yes, a big fish. A self-described small-town hero, Bloom explains how he left home at 18 determined to experience anything and everything life could dish out. He worked for the circus, took on daring assignments as a WWII soldier, and rambled across the country as a zany travelling salesman. Utterly unbelievable yet magical and delightful, Bloom's stories just don't translate to his son Will (Billy Crudup) who wants to know his dad's "true" life story. But little by little--through increasingly outlandish tales at which Will cannot resist smirking--the two begin to understand each other, and Bloom weaves his stories into their genealogical fabric.

A very disappointing blu ray for an entertaining fantasy movie
I will not review this movie, but only the blu ray itself. And about that I can be short: this blu ray falls short in everything. The picture quality is awful for a blu ray, it has a lot of grain and all the colours look a bit washed out. I can not remember how the dvd looked I viewed (once, years ago), but I can imagine that this blu ray does not look a lot better. Apart from the grain and bad colours, it does not look like an HD release in any way, there is very little detail, there is nothing special about this. The picture quality is so bad, that If I had not seen any other blu rays, than I would have considered never buying blu ray ever.
The sound is also nothing special, although I have to say that this is not a movie that needs incredibly detailed surround sound.
About the extras I can also be a very short: there are none, except for a director's commentary I have not bothered to listen to.
So, my conclusion about this blu ray release is: don't bother to buy it on blu ray, even if you have an HDTV, having this on blu ray adds nothing to the movie viewing experience, stick with the dvd or buy the cheaper dvd release.
A strange but enjoyable film
Give this film a little while to get going and you'll enjoy it .. though do not expect your usual Hollywood type production. It is a number of short fairy tales linked together by the story tellers relationship to his adult son running parallel.
Big Fish [blu ray]
It doesn't really matter what format you watch this on as the film will always shine through as a classic. A great cast, that do a superb job of telling a fantastic story directed by the brilliant Tim Burton. If you have not seen this film before don't think twice about purchasing it.
