An Expose of Beautiful, Contorted, Human Sculptures
In this beautiful book of 160 pages, New York art photographer Steven Speliotis explores his fascination with dominance & submission. He specifically chose to work with Asian females, utilizing the their long and well known history of cultural subordination as the pedestal on which this work stands. The noted contrast between the white ropes that he uses along with his models' silken white skin with the dark and isolated studio in which they are "imprisoned" is what captures you. This, one might say, is Steven's secret ingredient - a potent use of minimalism. That's all it is: black hair and black shadows, white rope and white skin, all knotted up into distended, contorted, striking human sculptures.

There is a message here. And Speliotis conveys it with the exquisite photography that he has become renown for. Commanding, brooding, enthralling, Asia Bondage has both the material and attitude to appeal to a wide range of interests. The photography is magnificent.

The Art of Sensual Rope
I appreciate seeing how the rope became an active partner in Speliotis' fine art photographs of passionate bondage. Winding, wrapping, confining, constricting, the rope does far more than limit movement and restrict posture. It adorns the female form. It complements her curves while invading her most private, most sensitive regions. In some of the photographs, it is not about the rope at all, but what is revealed from the models' faces, it is their deep involvement.
I also appreciate the fact that this is a personal vision and exploration between Speliotis and his models, Asian Women and the expert use of black & white photography.

Never judge a book by its cover...
...and this is a prime example.
If you're a fan of bondage, this book could come as a huge disappointment, especially as its cover promises so much. The quality of the photography is high (if occasionally 'air-brushed'), but in its exploration of the subject of bondage it leaves a lot to be desired. Surely a large part of the point of bondage is restraint, and you can't restrain someone by merely draping a few bits of rope over them! The tension (both physical and in the mind of the viewer) is almost totally absent. So is this an artistic photographic study or an anodyne attempt to cash-in on a 'racy' subject? Let's just say this reviewer feels a more appropriate title would be 'Asia - women and string'
