Synopsis
Rock 'n' roll roadie Le Donk (Paddy Considine, star of IN AMERICA, HOT FUZZ) sees a great opportunity when he spots up-and-coming rapper Scor-Zay-Zee, and instantly recognises his potential. Deciding to take the fledgling artist under his wing, and with the help of his 'friends', the Arctic Monkeys, so begins Le Donk's masterplan to make the rapper a star and them both extremely rich.
Revisiting a character who first appeared in a short film featured on the Channel Four programme, SHANE'S WORLD, and having worked together previously on A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS and DEAD MAN'S SHOES, old friends Considine and writer/director Shane Meadows (THIS IS ENGLAND, SOMERS TOWN) reunite for this very funny mockumentary that's sure to be a hit with fans of the likes of THIS IS SPINAL TAP and CB4.

Purple Hexagon Fun
Essentially a smaller scale and less caricatured cousin of Spinal Tap and the Comic Strip's Bad News, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee is an hour and ten minute fictional documentary following a few days in the life of a roadie, Donk (Paddy Considine), as he attampts to get his mate Scor-zay-zee an opening slot at an Arctic Monkeys concert at the Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester.
Where the film differs markedly from Spinal Tap/ Bad News is that (so I've read anyway) Le Donk's script was largely if not completely improvised. This works in giving the story an immediacy and intimacy with its subject, for instance when Donk is questioning his heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend Olivia (Olivia Colman) about her current love life. Colman's naturalistic performance is a treat to watch, while Le Donk's petulant mithering in this scene is hilarious.
While the extempore dialogue is sometimes inspired, there are also a few bits where it falls slightly flat - Considine seems too in control of himself to really let Donk's persona take over. The film never really builds any tension, and has no moments where you're wondering what's going to happen next.
If you like Dean Cavanagh's excellent (and ongoing) 'Svengali' series, you'll probably get a lot from Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee. The film also reminded me slightly of the Paul Calf Christmas special, taking ordinary settings and turning them into something as far away from Mike Leigh as it's possible to get, which is always a good place to be.
Hopefully this is just an introduction to Donk, Scorz, Olivia, and Shane Meadows, as it's fairly obvious that there's enough promise in these characters for at least two further films of this running time.
Amazingly funny and touching
I think this is Shane's best film to date. It may be lower budget than This is England but it packs in so many laughs and one of greatest end scenes ever. Reminds me of British Napolean Dynamite.
Paddy Considine is fantastic as Donk but for me the rapper Scorz steels the show.
Meadows' ROCKumentary - don't miss
I saw this at the cinema and it was hilarious. Paddy Considine is genius, he's such a funny guy - he made it up as he went along and he's brilliant. Very Spinal Tap. And of course you can't go wrong with Shane Meadows...
