CD Description
For most American listeners, Shirley Bassey is best known as the singer of songs associated with James Bond movies (especially the theme song for GOLDFINGER). But in her native Britain, "Bassey The Belter"--nicknamed for her powerful wall-of-sound style--is well-known as an interpretive pop singer. On this remix collection, many of the electronic dance scene's most notorious DJs and mix-masters have a go at de- and re-constructing Bassey's best tracks. These sonic sculptors include Mantronik, Nightmares On Wax, Groove Armada, and Propellerheads. This REMIX is not for old-school fans of unadulterated Bassey, but club denizens will find a lot to groove to here.
Customer Reviews
Shirley shines through - and the original vibe is kept.
Having passed this by several times, based on experiences of a lot of "Greatest Hits remixed" compliations, I am very glad I did risk it in the end. For those of you who shudder to think what may have been done here to Dame Bassey's classics, in most cases the additional production is percussive and edits - only a few of the tracks are more dubby (ie use a sample line) or clearly accessed from vocal master tapes. As such most retain the feel of the original relatively intact due to elements of the original instrumentation. However,if you are expecting a dance remix album then these fairly slow revamps may not be your cup oftea - these remixes have been done sympathetically throughout. That doesn't mean they aren't playful, or indeed don't range from good to excellent - they are! Several Bond themes get a revisit along the way, "GoldFinger" is a classic.
If you're a Bassey purist this is definitely worth a listen, and if you like your remixes tastefully done then this will also appeal. You simply can't keep a good girl down!!
Bassey for the 21st Century
This is a truly excellent album. I bought it for a quirk a couple of weeks ago, and was absolutely stunned at how good it was. The Groove Armada remix is cool! Shame History Repeating was left off, but what the hay! More please!
How wrong is Desiree, how right is Kenny Dope
Kenny Dope's remix of Relight My Fire is a seminal masterpiece, I can't quote the sleeve notes verbatim but to paraphrase it, Kenny simply states that he purely wanted to hear what it sounded like with the drums turned up, rock on Kenny. Another sublime track is Where do I Begin, beautiful. I've had the pleasure of seeing Dame Shirley live twice now & this album adds rather than detracts from the legend that is Shirley Bassey (this, Paradisiac & some underground NY hip-hop thing are the best records I've heard for a while, not forgetting St Germaine.....Shoki Shoki remixed........anything on Naked...)
