DAME SHIRLEY'S EARLIEST SUCCESSES STAND THE TEST OF TIME
There's a plentiful supply of Bassey material from which to chose but this collection delves into Dame Shirley's embryonic record successes released during the period 1956-1958 via the famous blue and silver Philips label.
There was always something extra special about Bassey's exciting raw vocal efforts and having the sixteen "A" and "B" sides running in chronological order, is the ideal way to appreciate her first Number One hit, AS I LOVE YOU plus other Chart successes, KISS ME HONEY, HONEY KISS ME, FIRE DOWN BELOW, THE BANANA BOAT SONG and YOU, YOU ROMEO, together with less celebrated supporting songs. Of special interest are the two songs Shirley recorded in America with famed Mitch Miller as producer - the perky novelty IF I HAD A NEEDLE AND THREAD and calypso-styled TONIGHT MY HEART SHE IS CRYING (the third number, THE WALL, waxed at the same session is sadly not included). Also available on this two-disc compilation are the contents of a rare extended-play disc recorded at London's famed Cafe De Paris night-club and Shirley's debut album BORN TO SING THE BLUES which extended her range beyond pop singles to the dramatic hues of BLUES IN THE NIGHT, THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES and a later version of BORN TO SING THE BLUES originally waxed earlier for her second single.
Good sound, notes and month/year of recording make this the ideal way to appreciate how Dame Shirley's style evolved during such a short period before she moved onwards and upwards to claim iconic status and superstardom.
