Amazon.co.uk Review
Known as the "Camino," the ancient road to Santiago de Compostela is a famous pilgrimage trek taken by people for centuries across northern Spain. It is said, by some, that this 500-mile path lies directly under the Milky Way and that it reflects the energy of the star systems above it. Facing her seventh decade of life on earth, writer and actor Shirley MacLaine decided to take this fascinating trek. She wasn't sure why, she only knew that the Camino had been travelled for thousands of years by "saints, sinners, generals, misfits, kings and queens". Her motivation was that doing the trek would help "to find one's deepest spiritual meaning and resolutions regarding conflicts in Self".
Typical of MacLaine, this is a personal story with enormous adventure, a smattering of flashbacks, and a hefty serving of cosmic revelations. Like a true pilgrim, MacLaine travels solo, willing to strip herself down to the backpacking essentials and find deeper meaning in all the bizarre, frightening, and coincidental events she encounters along the way. It is no small feat that this sixtysomething woman walked this gruelling path in 30 days. Readers can expect vivid stories of stalking paparazzi, icy showers, bouts of hunger, lost paths, a worshipping young man, a deranged woman screaming in a roadside shelter, saintly truck drivers, a fellow pilgrim in a wheelchair, bouts of constipation and diarrhoea, and a cosmic crescendo that will knock the socks off MacLaine's fans. --Gail Hudson
Customer Reviews
Keep an open mind and thoroughly enjoy this book!
Shirley MacLaine has written an entertaining and inspiring account of her pilgrimage. The first time I read this book it proved to be just too much to take on board - the second time around was far more enjoyable. Keep an open mind and you will find that there is a great deal to be discovered in this book, take from it what you will.
Shirley adds another piece to the revelatory jigsaw.
Shirley goes within - agin. Despite sore feet and travelling companions who would try the patience of a saint, she meets her Guru; zips off to the lost continents of Atlantis and Lemuria; is shown the origin of marriage; discovers why the Missing Link is missing; learns the destinction between soul-mates and twin souls; undergoes a form of Hara-Kiri that dosen't spoil the carpet; AND ... is back in time for tea. For those familiar with the writings of Alice Bailey, Shirley's revelation seems to be complementary to, rather than contradictory of, that text. There seems to be pressure building "behind the scenes" to kick-start humanity into a better understanding of its origins.
A truly fantastic and magickal adventure to awaken your soul
Well, you would say that I'm not your typical reader, as a 17 year old college student, but I do consider myself very spiritual. This book was meant to be a gift for my Grandfather from my mum, but I managed to pick up the book before my mum sent it on. First of all, I read the flaps and back cover, and thought nothing more of it. But something drew me back to it and I began to read the introduction. After the first few pages, I knew I had to buy this book and read it all. The powerful writing from Shirley MacLaine touched my soul, and has inspired me to take on the pilgrimage myself. If you are curious about karma and your spirituallity, this book is a must...
