Editorial Reviews

CD Description
On the poignant version of "I Forgot That Love Existed" found here, Morrison muses on the possibilities "If my heart could do the thinking/And my head began to feel". It's this very dichotomy between the emotional and the cerebral that informs his finest work, creating the necessary artistic tension. These and other contrasts are explored on this two-disc live set, recorded late in 1993, right after Van's return to his blues/R&B roots on TOO LONG IN EXILE. That return is well documented here (especially in his duets with Jimmy Witherspoon, Junior Wells and John Lee Hooker), but it's placed inand set in relief by the larger context of Morrison's catalogue.
R&B churners like "It Fills You Up" and "I've Been Working" share stage time with tender ballads ("Have I Told You Lately That I Love You", "Tupelo Honey"), jazzy excursions ("Jumpin' With Symphony Sid") and spiritual journeys ("InThe Garden", "Did Ye Get Healed?"). A NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO more than lives up to its back cover promise of "ballads, blues, soul, funk & jazz", offering all that and more, underthat distinctive, ultimately unclassifiable umbrella of VanMorrison music.

Who needs to go out...5
...when live music is as effectively packaged as this.

Van has a committment to live performance that has been cemented over decades and this is its most convincing testament so far.

There is almost literally something for everyone on this very long double album. As well as visiting his live classics ( a collaboration of the inevitable 'Gloria' with Dream Academy)he also successfully experiments with classics such as 'Stormy Monday" and a wonderfully hybrid "It's a Man Man Man's World"
Never before have I heard such an easy alliance of blues, jazz and yep folk - the highlight for me is a powerful reinterpretation of 'The Garden'.

Van is ultimately a live performer and this album really does reflect his stature in this respect.

Unreservedly recommended.

Could the music get any better?5
I've heard other CD's, live, studio recorded, whatever - but I can honestly say there are none better than this. With the amazingly flexible vocal chords of Mr Van Morrisson backed by the most amazing rhythm and blues band ever, you feel like you're actually there - and quite frankly i wish i was.

If there were one place I could go back to - It would be San Fran with Van the man back in the days of never ending musical superiority.

Fantastic live set5
Having only ever listened to studio output, I thought it high time to get into some of Van's live stuff. At first I was disappointed, since I had primarily bought it for Have I Told You Lately and Tupelo Honey. On first listen it's disappointing. But play it again and you will experience the nuances. The people he sings with only back him up, there is absolutely no doubt that Van is in charge (except for perhaps the track that features John Lee Hooker).

Even if you buy this album for one track, let it be Moondance/My Funny Valentine. Quite possibly the best end to an album I have ever heard.

Van is superb live, and I highly recommend this, for it's rich mix of R&B, Blues and Jazz. Top stuff.
