Customer Reviews
Top-notch, hard-driven funk
Purists may disagree, but this collection is better than any of the Ohio Players' individual albums. The Track listing says it all - Sweet Sticky Thing, Fire, Love Rollercoaster - songs that could fill a dancefloor in seconds. This is some of the best funk of the 70s. There are hard-edged, horn-driven tracks but the band shows there range with several smoother numbers as well. I can't recommend this collection enough.
OK but dated funk
Interesting if you like 70s funk music. For me though, there is too much singing & not enough brass work - I preferred Earth Wind & Fire & early Kool & the Gang.A fun album but hard to see what the fuss was now.Best track for me is Who'd She Coo - catchy, OK vocals & nice horns. Even made the UK pop charts in the mid 70s.
Other highlights include Fopp with its slower, slightly menacing tone & Skin Tight, 1 of their early hits. Still lots of vocals but nice horns.
Greatest Mercury Hits...
....Yes, that's what you get...Don't expect the Pain and Pleasure and Junie of the Westbound Days.
What you do get is the world's greatest ever funk band with some of their later greats: the big hit Love Rollercoaster (not my fave), Who'd She Coo, the ooooozing sex of Skin Tight, the smokin' Fire, the full-on funk of Fopp and Jive Turkey.
And then you get drowned in the orgasmic viscosity of Sweet Sticky Thing.
Yeah, there are lots of other tracks too...What do you want....Blood?
