Amazon.co.uk Review
In light of the 1990s' new-found appreciation of Schifrin's Mission: Impossible and Bullitt, this CD transfer of the original vinyl album is no surprise. But just shy of 30 minutes, and with plenty more that could be included, it's a bit ungenerous. After 20 films that pronounced him master of his art, Enter the Dragon was Bruce Lee's Hollywood break. The tragedy, of course, is that he died in Hong Kong three weeks before the film's premiere in 1973. So, perhaps fittingly, the score's infamous theme was a perfect portrait of Lee Jun Fan--fast, funky and fun. And who cannot help smirking with glee at the catchy vocal "Hyogah!"? Mixing jazzy offbeat percussive rhythms with oriental instrumentation, guitar and a heroic brass section, this is genre-defining stuff. Some 25 years later, the score served to revitalise Schifrin's career by inspiring the music for Jackie Chan's Rush Hour. Its success meant numerous re-recordings from the composer on his own label. If only this were one of them. --Paul Tonks
Customer Reviews
China-funk and lounge from Lalo.
This soundtrack is one of Lalo's best. The title theme is really cool combination of funky wah-wah guitar, some cool chinese instruments, a great moog melody and brass. All this mixed with great taste and style. It's just too damn cool. The rest of the score is not so effective but there's some cool stuff anyway. Highly recommended!!
A great score from an important and entertaining film.
Firstly, this soundtrack music, the composition and sound quality, are both very good. 5/5 for sound. Also, the presentation is good, with a fold-out sleeve, on one side there is a poster, and on the other side, lots of information about the score and film, including a transcription of an interview with Lalo Schifrin, one of the great movie score writers of the last century. However, where I feel this CD drops a star is in the duration, of just over 20 minutes, and only 35 seconds of my particular favorite music from the film, the banquet scene. A great score from a historically important and entertaining film.
Well I know I liked it
I purchased this because the movie had a certain element that exceeded most Kung Fu meets James Bond files of the time. That element happened to be the music which had been well written and I must say, an interesting listen. The music brings back memories of the film, particularly good ones if you enjoyed it as much as I did. However due to my current interest: experimenting in psychedelic funk, I found that it had a higher purpose than spinning in the background. Because I am a music student I enjoyed listening to it more than most who would wish for a good popular album. If you enjoyed Enter the Dragon and liked the music then check it out.
