CD Description
When R&B kingpin Al Green abandoned the secular world for gospel music, it seemed he'd left his old world behind forever. Indeed, Green became Reverend of his own church and recorded nothing but spiritual material for decades. However, the21st century saw a turnaround in his career, and EVERYTHING'S OK marked the second installment in Green's return to form, creating a pair of records where Green was reunited with Willie Mitchell, producer of his classic 1970s albums, on strictly secular material.
Like its predecessor, EVERYTHING'S OK is virtually indistinguishable from the essential records Green made for the Hi label some 30 years prior. Indeed, some of the same session musicians even returned to the fold. The punchy horns, syncopated rhythms, lush organ, cooing harmony vocals, and terse guitar lines are all present and accounted for. Most impressive, of course, is the fact that Green himself is still capable of going from a feline purr toa feral growl at the drop of a hat, his one-of-a-kind voicesounding as strong as ever, and ultimately delivering on the promise of the album's title.
Customer Reviews
Certainly OK Al!!!!
What a follow up to 'I Can't Stop' the man Al Green is certainly back to his best in this masterful album, a real gem. A personal favourite has to be the devine 'Perfect To Me' which is quite wonderful.
Well done AL and keep creating A1 albums as always!
Good Return To Form
I didn't feel his last effort was as good as the pundits made out yes there were some good tracks but a good few not so good tracks as well. I'm glad to say this effort is a lot better with a 70s feel to it maybe that's due to Willie Mitchell being back on production duties and the album has the feel of Explores your mind.
A welcome return to form. 4 stars
Brilliant
He's back....the real master.
Along with Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, Al Green is my fav singer.
I can't believe how cheap this album is!
I quite liked his last album, but this is much better.
A real return to form-and a return to a time when Soul music was all about brilliant musicians, superb production and timeless music. Not the sort of gimmick inspired rubbish you see now.
Courtesy of Willie Mitchell, what you get is lush instrumentation, a big bold sound, great songs, and the sort of feel you only got when Leroy hutson, Marvin Gaye et al were in their prime.
Al Green IS talent...true and defined.
A brilliant album.
