Customer Reviews
Should be rightly known as a classic
An overlooked classic by Leon Ware that, if Berry Gordy had gotten his way, would have been the follow-up to Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". Having given away all of the tracks for his original solo album to make up "I Want You", Ware says that he was asked to let Gaye record the follow-up album but he refused. As punishment, the album was released on the more-obscure Gordy Records imprint and given little promotion. However, their loss is our gain.
This record oozes class, with instant smooth soul classics like "Learning How To Love You" and "Instant Love", beautiful soul-funk ballads like "Holiday" and a brilliant reworking of his own "Body Heat", earlier recorded for Quincy Jones' album of the same name. The sexual energy, lush production and edgier sound of this album raise it above "I Want You". It's a fusion of ideas, combining strings similar to the likes of Barry White and album contributor BobbY Womack with Motown songwriting and throwing in a heavy dose of funk. It's incomparable. It's that good.
While not the soaring vocalist of Marvin, Ware still has a set of lungs but this album is a snapshot of a visionary; pointing the way forward for soul during what is considered to be the dying days of Motown. It is a shame that Leon doesn't get as much respect for being a great performer with great albums as he does for being a good producer and writer. This is his finest hour and you will not likely listen to as good a soul album for a while.
