Fans of soul music who are lucky enough to live close to east Putney will no doubt be aware of 'Soul Brother Records' and the efforts of all who work in the shop to maintain a friendly, credible and knowledgeable passion for Black music, with a particular emphasis on soul, R&B and Funk. In recent years this desire to share that passion has seen the shop release a number of carefully considered single artist discs which has often made available music which might otherwise have been lost, ignored, or remained the preserve of an elite cognoscenti. This passion is well represented here in the choices found on this compilation, the first in the 'Groove on Down' series.

This is a collection designed to explore the realms of late 1970's and early 1980's black music - a period which Laurence Pragnell, the album compiler, rightly describes as being "one of the most overlooked golden periods of soul music". This is a collection which clearly hasn't been conceived as a cynical money making project, presenting only what is currently considered exciting or relevant from that particular musical period. Instead it should be viewed as a labour of love with all the expertise that you should expect from specialists in their field.

This is an album that features some nice surprises, a cover of ToTo's 'Georgy Porgy' features Luther Vandross in particularly fine form, Melba Moore is exemplary on 'Standing Right Here', and the mellow groove of Garfield Fleming's 'Don't Send Me Away' is perfectly balanced. This isn't an album just for music specialists, the ever popular 'Bounce Skate Rock Roll' by Vaughn Mason provides a reminder of roller skate rinks and flashing lights, whilst the harder edged sound of 'Love Don't Come Easier' hints at the production values which were to become increasingly prevalent in black music as the decade progressed.

But the revelation of this compilation has to be the track which gives this collection it's name - 'Dunn Pearson's 'Groove on Down'. This 1978 track is a fantastic example of dark moody disco meeting funk meeting contrasting, soaring orchestration, and this track should be enough to convince you to buy!

The Soul Brother team is to be congratulated for managing to put together a collection which will appeal to those well versed in Disco and Boogie, as well as being welcoming for those looking to explore this period for the first time. This is a compilation which sets a standard to which other labels should aspire - and long may it continue.
